@ Red: Two really great books to check out: Six Figure Freelance, and the Writer's Digest Guide to Magazine Article Writing. Got me started on the right foot. I understand how you feel about your degree, but remember that everything - especially college - is a learning experience, so it couldn't have all been for nothing. But about the debt, sheesh, you're telling me, can't blame you for feeling that way at least a little.

Keep trucking and make your success as you see it; it's a competitive field, work hard, and you'll do well! It's a great deal of effort, but success is directly proportional to effort, and I think the writing world rewards you well if you hone your craft and work hard. And in my opinion, it's one of the most versatile degrees to have, I'm sure you'll find a great way to use it! :-)

Hey everyone! i'm new to the world of writing (as well as to this website). I just graduated with a degree in communication with concentrations in documentary video production and digital journalism. While the doc concentration was fantastic, the digital journalism was awful and I didn't learn ANYTHING! Now I'm struggling to learn, on my own, what it takes to be a writer (which wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't thousands of dollars in debt for nothing).

This website is really amazing and I check it every day. Thank you so, so, so much for taking the time to help out other writers.

Heidi,

I applied to the "movie experts" earlier also and never heard back. With this second more detailed ad, I am inclined to believe they are fishing for free material to get their site started. I have just sent them an email asking their company name and url. I'll let everyone know if I get a reply.

Did anyone apply to the Freelance Writer Wanted - Health ($0.50 per word) job? I checked out the Web site associated with the email address and all it does is direct you to a bunch of travel service and dating sites. I'm not saying that they couldn't be starting a psychology portal and paying .50/word, but it looked fishy to me and I didn't apply. Just curious to know if anyone else has thoughts about this.

Good idea about asking for different sites to review.. I think I will email them back and ask. I'm guessing they will not give me other options, but if they do, I will report back. :)

Okay, so first of all... I applied for that "Movie Experts" job about a week ago... they never contacted me and now they've sent out a more specific ad... does that maybe mean that they received too many applications??

Second of all... what in the world is with the UK Talented writers/bloggers ad saying they pay in peanuts? I'm from the US and I'm wondering if maybe I just don't get it... lol. "We pay peanuts, still interested?" I don't know.

And lastly, I applied for the sex offender issues writing job and have been hearing back from them steadily as they get ready to launch their forum, and I'm very excited to be working for them... It's certainly going to be a learning experience.

Thank you Jodee for all you do!

And we have a problem... the job at PoshGlam; e-mailing the address given gets you a return e-mail saying it could not be delivered, and the reason is that "therealposhglam" at AOL is full... the forwarded e-mail address is not working, and I guess the other one doesn't exist... what do I do now? It's such a good app., and I know I've got a shot.

I have a slightly different story...

I got the email about signing up to two dating services and "seeing if I could write the kind of review" they wanted. I emailed back with a line about, "my wife frowning on me signing up for dating services" and asked if I could have two other sites to demonstrate my ability. I never heard back, of course...

I'd be very interested to know if ANYONE ever has heard anything from them, other than the emails from the sites that they signed up for...

Also, on a different not, I received errors (lots of them) when trying to access this site today, saying you have gone over your CPU usage limit. Just an FYI if you didn't already know...

I too received that email about the content writing and reviews for 4 websites and was debating whether or not to do it--I would have deleted the email and never thought twice about it, but the initial posting here yesterday sounded so legit, offering 15-20 hours at $25/hr, I'm still tempted to try it out just in case. One piece of advice I have for anyone who is intrigued by something like this and can't pass it up--get a 2nd or 3rd email address just for such purposes. Email is free and I have several accounts, so that when I come across something like this where I need to register I can give a secondary email and not worry about getting flooded. Oh well, probably not even worth it to apply anyway but it can be tough wondering...

Yes I too applied to the dating site without knowing first-hand what it was. I got an email telling me to sign up. I refused. I forgot the name of the site/person but so much the better.

It really is a shame that there are stinkers out there trying to take advantage of people not just writers.

Note: Second time trying to post this post bc it said "Your Account Has Used Up Its CPU Quota." What does that mean btw?

@Amelia - there have been a few of those posted in different cities and require you to sign up for a Web site.

About three months ago, I got tricked into another. This was writing for a real estate company who wanted a freelancer to write property descriptions. Not even thinking, I did sign up for that Web site (Realty Trac) and since then, they send me about 5 emails a day. I tried to get out of their mailings and was told that to do so I needed a password that was established when I signed up for their newsletter, only I never received an email with a password, so I just have everything from them go into the spam box now. I even called them to say the only reason I'd enrolled with their site was for a job posting and gave the woman the Craigslist link and her response was "Too bad you fell for it without verifying employment offerings with our site."

I've seen similar affiliate scams/job postings with two dating sites, two poker sites, another realty site, and a debt consolidation site. When I see them now, I email the job ad and a copy of the email I've received, including the email address, to the company and ask if it is really a legit job or if one of their affiliates is trying to gain money through deceptive practices.

Hey friends, quick question.

I applied for a job off of Craigslist looking for "creative bloggers" or something to that effect. I got a lengthy email back stating that I had 'passed' the "initial screening" and now I need to submit a 50-100 word review of this dating site. I'm fairly certain this was discussed here a few days ago... it is a scam, right? Is there any real work to follow if you do something like this? I'm guessing since it feels "icky" it probably is... anyone do the review and find work or did everyone stear clear from it?

Thanks for any input!

Thanks for posting the writing leads. I applied to two jobs (crosses fingers). This site and About Freelance is where I always begin my searches every Mon., Wed., and Fri. Thanks again.
