Here are your Monday markets for this week:

Milwaukee Magazine

From the Web Site:

Milwaukee Magazine is a monthly magazine covering the people, issues and places of Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin. Total circulation is about 40,000; total readership (according to the respected Media Audit) is more than 220,000.

  1. We are interested in timely stories about current issues, local personalities, area business, sports, healthcare, education, politics, arts and culture, architecture and urban life, history, food, shopping, music and nightlife, recreation and the environment. We are particularly looking for writers who can deliver brightly written, well-researched service articles but are also interested in investigative stories from qualified reporters. Full-length feature stories run 2,500-5,000 words; if your query leads to an assignment, we’ll specify what length we’re looking for. We pay $700-$2,000.
  2. We are also in the market for two-page “breaker” stories, which are often short on copy (less than 1,500 words) and long on visuals.
  3. Stories for our front-of-book Insider section range from exposs to amusing slices of local life to interesting people profiles. We’re looking for stories you won’t find in other local publications and unconventional angles on the current scene. Freelance writers often begin their association with Milwaukee Magazine here. These stories usually run no more than 650 words and pay $50-$225. Query Assistant Editor Caroline Goyette. Mini-reviews for our Reviews page are assigned by Senior Editor Ann Christenson. Mini-reviews run no longer than 125 words and pay $50.

The Rambler

From the Web Site:

The Rambler accepts submissions for nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and artwork. There is no minimum length, but we request that submissions be no more than 8,000 words. While we are open to a variety of subjects, please do not send genre fiction such as science fiction, horror, romance, or children’s stories.

Rate of pay not disclosed. Pays on publication.

MOAA: Military Officers of America

From the Web Site:

Topics: Current military/political affairs; recent military history, especially Vietnam and Korea; personal financial planning; health and fitness; military family; retirement lifestyles; travel; and general interest. No fiction, poetry, or fillers. Original material only; no reprints.

Format: MS Word-compatible file. No footnotes.

Deadlines: Feature articles normally are scheduled six months in advance.

Queries: Submit detailed query before sending manuscript. Enclose or attach copies of published clips and résumé. Unsolicited manuscripts are rarely accepted.

Style: Active voice, non-technical, with direct quotes. Optimistic, upbeat theme. Use The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual.

Length: Features, between 1,000 and 2,000 words.

Pays $0.80 per word on acceptance.

Grit

From the Web Site:

Grit is a nationally distributed bi-monthly magazine with a circulation of approximately 150,000 through subscriptions and newsstand distribution. Grit celebrates the intergenerational bonds among those who live on the land with spirit and style – a legacy of self-sufficiency, audacious ingenuity and pragmatic problem solving that gave this country its backbone and continues to shape its unique character.

Grit purchases shared rights, which grants the publisher the right to publish or republish the work in any form in any country, at any time. The author agrees not to publish the work in any other media for a period ending one year after the date of the issue in which the work initially appears. After this period, the author retains the right to republish the work in any form in any country at any time, as well.

NO unsolicited manuscripts will be accepted; authors must query first. We prefer e-mail queries, which must include “Query” in subject line. Include full name, address and phone number. If a query is accepted, the author will be contacted regarding the article assignment.

DO NOT try to write for Grit if you know nothing about rural life. We intend to be an authoritative and sometimes playful voice for rural lifestyle farmers and country or small-town dwellers, and we require our writers to be informed about that way of life.

Pays $0.35 per word on publication.

Parabola: Tradition, Myth and the Search for Meaning

From the Web Site:

Parabola is a quarterly journal devoted to the exploration of the quest for meaning as it is expressed in the world’s myths, symbols, and religious traditions, with particular emphasis on the relationship between this store of wisdom and our modern life.

Each issue of Parabola is organized around a theme. Examples of themes we have explored in the past include Rites of Passage, Sacred Space, The Child, Ceremonies, Addiction, The Sense of Humor, Hospitality, The Hunter, The Stranger, and Prayer & Meditation.

Thanks Jodee, what an interesting mix of genre publications, and a refreshing change from the blah-mags in most guideline lists. I often end up spending my earnings right back on subscriptions for inspiring mags like these. :) Angela
