Thanks as always, Jodee!
I’m spending the next three days at a horror and paranormal convention in town helping my husband promote his novel. I will also be promoting my own book (I received the first copy yesterday) which is being published in October.
Have a great weekend!
Sounds like fun! Congrats to you both!
I applied for the astrology listing. Thanks for putting these up! My luck will change if I keep plugging, I hope…
Thanks for another great list, Jodee, and have a fantastic weekend everyone! Hopefully I survive the family bbq I offered to host in a moment of delirium…
Three page bio for $75. WHATEVER. Not worth the effort (even if they give you a series of facts and a timeline). That’s ridiculous, in my opinion.
Has anyone else applied or had any experience with Trazzler? I found the posting here a couple of days ago advertising $1000/mo. for travel writers. It prompted applicants to create an account (beep, beep beep–spidey sense is tingling) and then an email would be sent explaining the rest of the application process. I received the email today (two days later) and it sounds to me that they want you to just submit content, don’t actually pay for it and then if you get published they’ll keep you in mind for a paid position in the future. Anyone else know anything? Sounds to me to be a shameful ploy to build up the travel content on their site, which is disappointing because I really liked the format–they provide more intimate, detailed travel stories toward selling vacations. Really annoying that they’d advertise $1000/mo. Glad I have a phony email account for these type of situations. At least offer some revenue sharing for people that click on the links for packages.
Thanks once again for an awesome list. Heard back from the Halloween one today, getting them an article by Monday. Thanks so much!
I had responded to a person who needed a writer 3 days ago and he got nasty with me when I asked for the pay rate and types of articles done and this was what the guy said to me(note: these are his actual words)
“That is one heck of an unprofessional way to inquire about a job.”
Now if that wasnt rude what isnt? This guy acted like I wasnt supposed to ask about the type of work I am doing and guess what he was going to offer as payment for each article .01 per word. I’ve been writing for more than 13 years and I know this fool wasnt about to offer me a penny a word when I should be getting $5.00 or more per article at the most $20-25 per article. That’s the sad reality that cheap fools offer experienced writers when they don’t want to pay them what they’re worth.
I am new here. Actually I am new to this whole freelance thing. I know it’s going to be rough on me for a while, but I’ll get my big break. I personally have no professional writing background. I did some writing in HS for our school newspaper which wasn’t really that long ago since I am only 22, but I know employers are looking for experience. All I can do is hope I get something. I love writing and I would love to do it forever, but I don’t want to tie myself down to one person which is why I think freelance is the best option for me. I did apply for the movie blogger one though. I think I can offer fresh witty ideas and I love movies and celebs and all that jazz. So for now I keep applying and crossing my fingers. Thanks for the lists daily though. This really helps.
Dorothy,
You may want to consider writing for sites like Triond or Ground Report to build your writing portfolio or even Associated Content. As you build yourself more as a writer it also helps to give some credentials for you to show employers you are established as a writer. Most of the people who come here are semi-part time or even full time professional writers with at least 5 years or more experience. Be prepared to go through periods where you could be fired from jobs or going through dry spells where work may not be as plentiful. What you want to keep in mind is that a good writer has at least a 2-4 regular clients to keep a steady stream of income coming in. In order to gain experience you have to work from the bottom up. Apply for internships in your local city and do some of those they can help build your resume up. After a while consider setting up your own website and list links of your work published so you can show employers your past work for them to consider you for writing jobs.
Jodee,
Did I say thank you recently? If not, then I meant to! You get me going every day … much appreciated?
(And you too, Deb)

Nafeesah, you said you’ve been writing professionally for 13 years and you should be getting at the most $20-25 per article? (forgive me if I misread that). But I think you are selling yourself short!! With 13 years of experience I would think you would charge so much more. I would never write an article for only $5 and I’d be hesitant to write anything more than 250 words for less than $20, and I’m just starting out. Don’t let people who are trying to get away with getting cheap labor get away with it. You’re worth more!
Lesley,
That guy was declined automatically because I won’t talk if the pay is that low. I’ve had work ranging from $5 to as much as $25 per article. I think it’s tacky for someone to even consider offering someone who’s been writing for more than 10 years. It’s just the fact that I’ve gotten a lot further with jobs that paid me $5 per article with a set with as many as 27-30 articles on a single subject. I check everyone I inquire about a job and if they even blurt out a penny a word then it’s time to pass them over for someone paying actual dollars for a single article. I agree that it is selling yourself short if someone offers you little money for a single article. Have you considered writing for Associated Content? I write for them just to keep a little extra change coming in and Triond and Ground Report are good places to put up work as well to generate revenue from it being viewed on different sites.
