@ Joe: Since you asked....I don't think much about what other writers charge, to be honest with you. You need to figure out what you feel is a fair rate for your services, based on your level of experience, the market you are targeting, and your skills. Then charge accordingly.

I wrote $5 articles when I first started out. If I had a choice between working and not working, I chose working every time. But....a client who used to assign batches of $5 articles was the one who took a chance and offered me the opportunity to write my first ebook. Another one that I started with doing small jobs gave me a shot at a copywriting assignment, which gave me some experience in that area. I've been able to build on both of those earlier experiences to get better assignments.

My $0.02 worth.

Ann - I was a paralegal for five years before I started writing. I've never seen anyone get reimbursed for trial testimony or a deposition since they could easily subpoena you and compel you to appear if you refused. It wouldn't hurt to ask the attorneys that are calling you as a witness if they could reimburse you, at the very least, for your mileage/parking. But, you will probably have to chalk this one up as part of your civic duty.

Ann,

I'm sorry you had to witness that. I don't know what to tell you. I've never heard of being reimbursed for doing a deposition. Doesn't mean it does not happen, just that I've never heard of it. :-)

Good luck.

Thanks for this excellent list, Jodee!

It was your lists that gave me some writing clients.

I have one favor to ask, though. May I ask your opinion about low ballers? I posted a piece on my blog last night, titled " Are You A Pro Writer or A Low Baller?" and I need some experienced and insightful opinions on it. You can check out the post at: http://skilledwriter.wordpress.com/blog-posts/are-you-a-pro-writer-or-a-low-baller/

Thanks in advance!

Think it's a bad situation. Amy Derby has worked at law firms and might have some decent insights.

@Chris - Criminal is correct. She's up on felony counts of, I guess, assault with deadly weapons. And it's her and her ex-boyfriend's word against each other which kind of negates everything, so it's the police officers who responded, the 911 dispatcher, and my testimony that will have the most impact.

Right now it's all a waiting game. I proofread court depositions as one of my job, so at least I know what to expect when I get to that stage. :-)

@ Ann--I assume that is in criminal court? I thought, perhaps if it was civil court where she was being sued for damages then you might be able to work reimbursement out with the plaintiff's attorney, seeing as how you'd be the star witness and key of the case. I don't have much experience in the area, but just a thought. Tough situation--hope it works out for you.

Thanks for today's leads, Jodee, and especially for the green jobs listings the site! I have to say I am so glad it's fall; I am not built for the heat.

And best of luck, Ann, that sounds very traumatic!

Ann G., I'm sorry to hear that your workload is going to be affected. I applaud you for doing your part to see that justice is served. (Wow! What a thing to witness.) Hope the case ends quickly, for your sake.

@Michelle - Thanks. I've never experienced a situation anything like this and I think I'm still a little shaken up. I've known this girl since she was 11 so for her to crack like that was hard to witness. It was very surreal.

I did find in the state laws that I would be entitled to mileage and a certain amount of reimbursement. If they could time it that I'm finishing up at the same time high school lets out and I have to pick up the boys, it wouldn't be so bad.

So sorry to hear of the horrific event Ann. I have been on the other end of the spectrum. I have worked for MB. Justice and have seen and heard all kinds of nasty things. Yes you do get the money but here (MB.)it takes ten days to kick in

Thankfully it is a gorgeous day here. Cool, crisp fall temperatures and plenty of sunshine. After last week's fiasco, I NEED IT!

I have a situation that occurred and wonder if anyone else has run into something like this and how you account for it. In a nutshell, let's just say I witnessed what I guess the courts have deemed assault with a deadly weapon (a car), I don't really think the person would have gone through with it, but she wasn't stable at that moment and used my front lawn to try to run someone over. I was home and saw it happen. Goes to show that even living in the sticks does not guarantee a life of peace and quiet!

As the key witness, I'll most likely have to make an appearance in court and go give depositions to the lawyers involved. I don't even know dates yet, I've just been told to be prepared to have to go spend time at the court house and lawyer's offices, so obviously this is going to mean I have to cut down my work schedule. I doubt there is anyway to be reimbursed for this loss? I know I'd be entitled to jury duty money, but this is a whole different situation and something I've never encountered.

I really hope the comic writer position is the read deal, but the directions on the page are sort of... odd. Oh well, I'm hoping that it's just to see who can follow directions.
