I try to avoid any sites or individuals that as for “listing” fees or other fees up front. Some of them may be legitimate, but I’ve heard so many horror stories (from writers and other arts people) that I just prefer to stay away. Besides, there are plenty of locations (say – freelancewritinggigs.com) that offer great leads and don’t cost a dime, plus you get wonderful tips, helpful suggestions and much needed support for your time.

@Joe–sounds like you’ve run into Quentin Cougher? I got that email last week and wasn’t too sure about it. There was some discussion on this board about his legitimacy back in July or August. Do a google search on the name and you can find the links and decide for yourself. If it’s something else–definitely raises suspicion–you shouldn’t have to pay to work.

@Joe: I found that same thing a couple weeks ago, as I come here often but usually just lurk. I asked for the sample list he was willing to give, then said that I’ll wait. He emailed me yesterday and asked about it. It looks like he just takes a list of bidding projects, because all the ones in the sample say “interested in hearing bids from multiple authors” and though it’s a one time fee, I just don’t get it… so I skipped it.

There’s just one thing that’s bugging me. A few days ago, I answered one post that needs writers. Today I receive a reply. I was instructed to pay a one-time fee of roughly $7 before I would be included in their pool of writers.

I sense some red flags over this one.

What do you, folks, say?

@ Deb: I found that link and applied there anyway. That was last year, and I expect they generally handle things well. I called them when I began freelancing to ask about where to send pitches, and they seemed very open about freelance pitches. After I wrote my asking rate and when I prefer to receive payment, I also wrote in my e-mail: “I expect that Haute Living, as a respected luxury lifestyle publication, pays fairly and on time.” I’m taking my chances, that’s a nice byline and I know I have great ideas for that issue.

I totally think they would consider telecommute. They are looking for people to focus on certain regions for TRAVEL, so go ahead and offer your work and ideas, from wherever you are, offering a regional focus there.

Just a note on the Writers Needed (Telecommute)

She said the most she can pay right now is $3 to $5 with articles ranging from 300 to 1500 words. So there’s not a lot of money to be made with this one.
