Update: Our first FWJ Radio segment started out a tiny bit slow but we quickly recovered and had a great discussion about our first freelance writing jobs. Here’s the player if you missed it!
When you run the top blog and community for Freelance Writers, how do you take your blog to the next level? For us it will be radio.
We love our discussions here at FWJ. Many times, I’d like to go on and on about topics, but don’t want to lose my readers. Today we’re going to try going beyond the 500 worder with our first live community broadcast and discussion. FWJ Radio debuts today on BlogTalkRadio!
Since this is our first episode and I don’t know if I’m going to break something right off the bat, our discussion will be light, but meaningful. Our topic is “Our First Freelance Writing Jobs” we’ll discuss how we started out, how much it paid and how things have changed since then.
Did you know BlogTalkRadio offers an interactive experience? Chat will be open so I hope you’ll register to take part in the discussion. We’ll also open up the phone lines for calls later so you can tell us about your first freelance writing job.
Please join the FWJ blogging team this morning for our first installment of FWJ Radio. If you can’t make it to the live broadcast, the segment is available on demand for later streaming or downloads. I’ll also put the player in the sidebar so you can listen while you look for work – but if you can, do make it to the live event and interact with the FWJ Community.

It’s Jodee, Terreece, and me. Objective case follows the verb. How can you give advice to anyone else, when you don’t even know simple grammar?
Stop trying to present yourselves as experts when you clearly aren’t; and I’m not talking about grammar alone. Your advice in many cases is inaccurate, incomplete, or just plain wrong!
I’m looking forward to hearing about where everyone started out! Unfortunately I’m behind a firewall so I will have to wait until I get home. Great idea for fresh air into your blog.
@Sylvie
If you don’t like the advice go somewhere else. Deb and Jodee provide resources to help people survive and make a living. I depend on them so that I don’t have to browse every classified ad in the world. They do work I don’t have to. I’m doing work today with a multi-million dollar hotel company that owns thousands of hotels around the world. They sent me a document with a misspelling, but I didn’t call the CEO or email them asking them why they’re sending me a document with an error in it.
Congrats guys! I’m so excited for you. Hope it goes well.
@ Spencer: Agreed.
The work that these people do is very valuable to those of us who choose to accept it with gratitude. If you’re not happy with the advice here, you’re free to visit other blogs or even start your own and give out your own brand of advice.
Drat — I just missed everything but the last 2 minutes. Is it archived? If so, please provide a link! THANKS!
Apparently the full moon affects some of us more than others…
Anyway, I enjoyed listening in this morning, and I’ll definitely be back next week! And Deb, your voice sounds even friendlier and down-to-earth than your writing here, if that’s even possible! Great job everyone!
Oh, and Terreece: I hope your tree situation gets better, and you stay safe!
Great show, Deb, Jodee, and callers. The chat was awesome, too.
@ Leigh: Thank you! It was a lot of fun to do.
As I read FWJ through an RSS reader I hope you continue to post the new episodes as this is quite exciting (just started listening in now).
Deb & Jodee – Congrats on the first show! I can’t listen t it yet, the library people are really serious about being quiet. I can’t believe how loud I really am :0) I really hated not joining you, but I will be there next week if I have to drive to Californy to find the Internets (South Park reference!)
Amanda – Thank you, the whole city should be back to normal by Sunday night. Until then I’m truly a roving reporter :0)
Simply delightful! It’s great to be able to put some voices to the faces and text I’ve grown to adore over the past year or so.
I agree with Amanda Nicole, your voice is even more friendly and down-to-earth than your writing style, Deb. Yours is, too, Jodee.
I have you guys to thank for my freelance writing career. I’ve landed about 95% of my gigs through the leads posted on this blog. I’ve been with a couple of these clients for a year or more now.
I’m a true FWJ junkie and proud of it, so keep up the great work Deb and Jodee! I’m looking forward to the next show.
@Jacqueline – All BlogTalkRadio segments are archived so you can access the stream or download soon after the live broadcast. The player will become a permanganate part of our sidebar.
@Amanda – Thanks so much for tuning in. How did we do?
Jodee – it was so awesome to talk to you!
Terreece- We gave you a shout out.
Paul – Your comment made my day and has me walking on air. Thank you so much – it’s people like you who keep this blog going.
Andy – You can subscribe to FWJ Radio via its RSS feed as well. Click on the link in the post for all the options.
By the way we had 54 live listeners today and a few dozen more (so far) listened to the archived version. Not bad for a first show!
@ Deb: It was wonderful to talk to you, too.
@ Terreece: Looking forward to talking to you next week.
@ Paul: Thank you so much! You have made my day, too!
Great first show ladies. Thanks for giving us yet another reason to visit.
I just had the chance to listen. I couldn’t hear all of it (because I’m hard of hearing, not because there was anything wrong with the programming), but the parts I was able to hear were great.
I heard 708 and I was like WOO HOO, one of my neighbors is calling in! And then it was Jen (I call her jennydecki in my head) and I was totally was too excited about that. I didn’t catch the name of the caller who writes about snacks, but I would like to have that job.
Terreece, I hope you’re roving because you’re without connections and not because there was any damage done to your home.
I will try to tune in live next time. When is the next program going to be?
Deb, good luck with your talk at Expo. I’m sure you’ll be great!!
We’ll be broadcasting Tuesdays at 11 a.m.
Darn it — I missed it! Would have had fun calling in I’m sure. Good job and I’ll be sure to catch the next one live.
