Monday Markets for September 8, 2008

This week on Monday markets I’ve got a photography magazine, a magazine dedicated to wildlife (as opposed to just having a wild lifestyle), and one that focuses on “green topics.” The final one on the list, Faces, is a magazine for children.

Photo Techniques Magazine

From the Web Site:

Work must be original and not previously published. Please include your e-mail address, and home and work telephone numbers on both your manuscript and illustrations. Upon acceptance, we’ll first edit and lay out the article, then fax it to you to check for errors. Articles generally pay $100 per published magazine page.

You can send text and images via e-mail attachments. (Please, however, do not imbed your graphics into your Word documents.) Send your work to: slewis@phototechmag.com

If sending text and images via U.S. Mail, include a disk with your article in Microsoft Word format. Items submitted via U.S. Mail must be accompanied by a return envelope (and packing) with return postage. Please package your work well, and ensure that it is easy to handle and re-package.

Text: Articles should be less than 2,500 words. Text should be submitted in double-spaced format. Please include any diagrams, illustrations or photos to be used with the article, along with captions. Captions should include type of camera used, type of film and any other technical information—including camera settings, how you processed it, type of developer, type of paper, etc.

Images: Send 8–20 prints; 8x10s are best; anything larger than 11×14 is strongly discouraged—they’re difficult logistically and hard to scan. If sending slides please enclose between 15-25 images for us to review, along a description of what’s in the photographs, where you shot them, the type of camera/lens set-up used, and type of film. Slides should be good dupes: DO NOT send valuable or irreplaceable originals without specific consent. Please indicate if digital images are comprised of more than one “negative.”

Pays $400 for a four-page portfolio.

National Parks Conservation Association

From the Web Site:

Subject Matter: NPCA publishes articles about areas in the National Park System, proposed new areas, threats to parks or park wildlife, new trends in park use, legislative issues, and endangered species of plants or animals relevant to national parks.

Queries: Query first, enclosing samples/clips of your work. Include a brief outline of your idea(s) with submission. Queries should include a self-addressed stamped envelope. We do not accept unsolicited manuscripts.

Submissions: Material submitted for publication in National Parks is considered on speculation. We are not obligated to buy a manuscript, including stories we assign, until we have accepted it for publication. We pay a 33-1/3-percent kill fee if an assigned story is unacceptable. Payment is made upon acceptance and after all parties sign a letter of agreement. National Parks does not guarantee publication of manuscripts, even if accepted.

Plenty Magazine

From the Web Site:

Overview
Plenty covers a broad range of lifestyle topics, from food, travel, and fashion to technology, business, and culture. We’re looking for creative, well-researched ideas that put a positive spin on protecting the environment. You can pitch us about any subject you’d like, but please do your homework and flesh out a few details about your proposed topic. Vague pitches like “I’d like to do a feature about hybrid cars” will not be taken seriously.

The front-of-book columns (“Forward”) are more news-oriented, while back-of-book departments (“Choices”) address lifestyle topics like fashion, food, and homes.

How to pitch
Pitches and clips should be sent via e-mail to editorial@plentymag.com.

We do our best to respond to all queries within two weeks. Feel free to send a brief follow-up email if you don’t hear anything after two weeks, but if we don’t respond within a week of your follow-up, you can assume that we’re turning down the idea.

We prefer pitches that are targeted to a specific department, and we strongly suggest that you read the website and a few back issues of the magazine to familiarize yourself with the content before pitching.

Please note that Plenty cannot be held responsible for lost, damaged, or unsolicited materials.

What NOT to pitch
The following departments are handled in-house:
Products for Green Gear, Green Style, Green Home, and Food
PlentyLabs
Dilemma

Pays $1 per word for print stories; $150 for web-only stories – 25 percent kill fee
