I don’t pimp the day job here too much because I don’t always want to spam the community, but I thought this was relevant. Craig Newmark, the Craig behind Craigslist, will be on BlogTalkRadio this afternoon at 4:00 EST. Craig will talk about Craigslist, how the Internet is evolving and more. As of this writing I don’t know if the host is talking calls for Craig, but if you attend the live broadcast, maybe you can ask question in chat. Maybe Craig will answer some of the questions that are often asked here regarding flagging, scams, etc. Click here to [Read more…]

Kill Fees – Not a Halloween Tale

By Terreece M. Clarke For many writers it’s a bloody stab to the heart – the kill fee (cue scary movie scream). Writers are given a kill fee when a publication decides for whatever reason – change of direction, unusable article, etc. – not to use an article and instead of paying the writer the total agreed upon fee, they pay a smaller fee for the now “dead” article. The fee is usually a percentage of the total owed. Kill fees are a much debated topic among freelance writers. I did a brief interview with two knowledgeable and well-respected writers [Read more…]

Freelance Writing Jobs for Wednesday, October 29, 2008
by Jodee Redmond Good morning FWJ Friends! It’s been snowing overnight and I woke up to everything looking like it has been covered in white frosting! I’ve divided up today’s leads between ones that specify that they are telecommuting ones and the ones that mention a specific location. Only a couple of these look like they are on-site opps, and these employers may be open to hiring someone other than a local candidate. I found this wording in the text of an ad I saw this morning and thought it was worth mentioning as an example of a red flag [Read more…]
Press Release Writer Wanted
Deb’s Update – Thanks for applying but I’m not accepting any more applications. Hi Guys, I know there’s lots of talent here so I’m putting out the feelers. I, and several other professional bloggers, need short press releases written. We would love to hear from press release writers to see some samples of past press release writing and also receive a rate quote. Now, my budget is small but I want to be fair (as do the other bloggers who are looking for a press release writer). I would also be willing to exchange a written press release for advertising [Read more…]
Use Keywords to Label Your Images for Increased Traffic
When I wrote for a music blog, I went from receiving a few hundred visitors a day to a few thousands visitors a day overnight. Did I hit it big on Digg? Get major Stumblage? No. I brought in thousands of readers through Google Image Search. I know many bloggers and web writers label their images haphazardly or with little thought as to whether or not they’ll bring in search engine traffic. A picture labeled “snow122208″ probably won’t bring in as many search results as one labeled “snow conditions”, “snow boots”, “snow tires” or “snow boarding.” In addition to saving [Read more…]
Press Release Writing Intro

By Terreece M. Clarke Press releases make up a nice little chunk of web writing and is good steady work if you are interested. Why? Because on any given day there are thousands of companies trying to catch the eye of the media and potential customers. Many of these companies don’t have a public relations team. Many freelance writers are curious about press releases, but are intimidated by the process. There’s nothing to fear, content is content, it is the approach that is different. What’s the point? Press releases are designed to get the media interested enough in a company, [Read more…]

by Jodee Redmond Good morning FWJ Friends! I’ve tried a different way to categorize the leads. The “Telecommute” ones are ones where no specific job location is mentioned in the ad. The “Site Specific” ones are ads where the employer wants applicants from a certain geographic area, but this doesn’t necessarily mean the work is on site. I hope that helps you to find the opportunities you are most interested in. You're Hired! Don't Blow It…
by Deborah Ng As freelancers we know there’s no better feeling than knowing we were chosen to do a job out of dozens, if not hundreds of applicants. Something about our writing styles set us apart from the rest, and that has us walking upon air. With some writers that pleasure is short-lived. Even though landing the gig is the hard part, they find it tough to keep interested in their assignment. So if you want to turn your clients into repeat clients, and you want the gig to be something steady, it’s best to be on your best behavior, [Read more…]

Promoting Yourself in a Network Environment
One of the smartest moves that bloggers working in a network can make is to find ways to promote themselves. Your own personal brand can be moved from blog to blog, network to network, and if you are thinking about your own future in this business, you will want to focus on building your own personal brand in various ways to allow you to transfer it from site to site. The most successful person that I know who was able to pull this off is Chris Garrett. At one point, he was writing on a number of great blogs and [Read more…]

FWJ Poll: Let’s Try This Again – What Do You Earn as Freelance Writer?
In yesterday’s poll I asked what everyone feels is a fair wage. Most of the respondents checked off $100 or more. Now, I know we would all like to earn this, but my mail, the comments and the writing forums tell me most are earning otherwise. You see, every time I wonder if we should raise the ante, for instance only post jobs over $20, we get a protest. Many writers want and need the lower paying jobs. So if most everyone polled earns between $75 – $100, where are the $10 – $25 writers who insist on us posting [Read more…]
How to Find the Confidence to Ask for a Raise
by James Chartrand This is the second post in a series on increasing your rates and getting more money writing for a living. Feel free to ask your questions in the comment section, and we may cover the answer in an upcoming post. Last week we discussed circumstances when you shouldn’t ask for a raise, but there are definitely times when you should seek out that pay hike to better compensate yourself for a job well done. The problem is that many people feel very uncomfortable discussing the subject of pay increases and money with their clients. Most writers don’t [Read more…]
