BlogTalkRadio Launches Blog Action Day Talkathon

I realize this is off topic for a freelance writing blog, but today is Blog Action Day and the topic is one that has a personal meaning for me.

I already told you about my grandmother, who read her way out of poverty. I also grew up knowing what it was like not to to be able to afford peanut butter or other treats. In fact, my brother and I were reminiscing recently about a day when we were in our early teens and my Mom was so happy. She had extra in her pay check and could afford to buy meat that week. She bought a box of frozen minute steaks and we ate cheese steaks and fries feeling like royalty.

It may sound like a very silly thing, but at that point in our lives, we subsisted on a lot of home made soup and spaghetti. Dad was a librarian and  Mom was an Assistant Professor at a local college but eventually left teaching to better support her family. I’m happy to tell you Mom retired in comfort last year from her job as an Instructional Designer.

So you see, Blog Action Day has a special place in my heart. Granted, I had a roof over my head and food to eat but many didn’t. I’m one of the fortunate ones. I hope you’ll forgive me for promoting Blog Action Day and our BlogTalkRadio Talkathon for Poverty.

Some details:

  • The Talkathon runs from 12 noon to 12 eastern.
  • The day will feature many interesting guests – activists and champions for the cause.
  • There will be a social media roundtable at 5:00 EST – the theme is using social media from charitable causes.
  • If you blogged about Blog Action Day and we mention your blog on the air, you have an hour to call in and win a prize.

There’s so much going on. Please stop by and listen, call in and say hello or take part in the chat. And please, visit Blog Action Day to see how you can participate. Feel free to post the talkathon player on your blog too!

Thanks for letting me talk about poverty today. Tomorrow, we’ll go back to our regularly scheduled programming.
