I don’t take the word “samples” to always mean that I have to write from scratch, but that I have to submit a sample of my work that is relateable to the topic they need writers for and fits their guidelines (300-400 words, feature column style). At any rate, that is what I did for the parenting job post. I figure if they like my style, they’ll be in touch.

I just replied to the crafter/parenting one. I’m pretty new to the freelancing area so I feel kind of dumb about sending two articles I wrote…I hope they are legit because it took me a long time. Sigh, I guess I’ve learned my lesson. I’ll post if I here anything back from them.

I checked out the economics blogger. They want a lot of information from you, and seem to insist that you have some degree in business – but make no mention of potential pay or responsibility.

Just wanted to mention that I applied for a job on the list about a month and a half ago. It was a long, convoluted process, but in the end, I was given the position of writing a weekly blog post on scrapbooking, along with a sample or two of what I was talking about. The guy is super nice, I get a byline AND the pay is $40 a post. Now, just once a week isn`t a lot, but still, it all adds up and I`m thrilled to actually be getting some decent cash for blog posts!

Krista: I’m also a Canadian that works mostly for American clients and I’m thrilled about the dollar now. I get paid mainly through PayPal and after the exchange rate and their cut, I’d make about $45 for every $50 I earned. Right now I make $51 for every $50 I earn so that is quite a difference when I add up my monthly earnings. I’m a full time freelancer so it really makes a big difference.

Did anyone else read the parenting/crafting columnist ad and get a bad feeling? Asking for two “sample columns” doesn’t smell right to me. I am more than happy to provide relevant clips, but to write two “sample” columns on the topic they specify?

Happy Thanksgiving Jodee and everyone else in Canada. Are other Canadians as pumped as I am about the dropping dollar? I know it’s bad for a lot of people, but as someone who works almost exclusively for American companies, I can’t help being excited. I’ll take an 18% pay increase any day!
