I have a question...

A few days ago, someone mentioned I could apply for an EIN and use this number when filling out a 1099 form.

My question is this...will that EIN number be a valid substitute for the SSN#? Meaning, I place my EIN in the same spot I would normally input my SSN# on the 1099?

Thanks.

-Mike

@ Roxie

These are some good points. I guess it depends on the nature of the work and relationship. It's hard to have a blanket rule for a situation like that without considering the individual circumstances. In general, I'd probably assess the benefits and disadvantages. If it was just a little bit of extra work and had the chance to build a positive working relationship, I would probably consider doing it. ON the other hand, if it was a one-off gig or if it had become a habit of the employer to ask for free work, I'd have to decline and reinforce the rates.

As per James Chartrand's post on asking for a raise -- time to ask Deb for one, because what you did with the subheads is extra-special cool and adds greatly to the value of this site. You rock!!!!

@ Chris: I disagree on the idea that you should go above and beyond in this case. I am in the habit of doing this for clients, but the job is to write a bio for someone for a dating site; this person who needs the bio is probably not a publisher, and he probably won't be calling for a great deal of extra work. That's not to say that he can't or won't, but I don't think the goal here should be to go above and beyond. It looks like a one-time gig relationship, with a very small possibility for future assignments, so the goal should be to get paid.

I say drop him a kind reminder, such as "As I mentioned, my rate for this project is $0.15/word, and there are no charges for a second edit, and that will be the cost for an additional, separate bio." If you want to, you can say something such as, "My time is my most valuable asset as a freelancer, so please understand that I cannot write a separate bio without pay," to enforce the issue, but that kind of statement is up to you, and it depends on what kind of attitude this guy is already showing in his communication with you.

Even if its not too much extra work, and you don't mind going above and beyond you HAVE to charge for the second one! Here's why: You said you would charge a certain amount, plus $0 for one edit, and you agreed what one edit would be. You must establish a habit of following through on your specific words, your specific verbal agreements with clients, and I think you'll be respected for it.

Another note on the money-making mindset and philosophy: Never apologize, or say "I hope you understand," and don't re-explain or justify your rates. You are worth it, believe it, believe you'll receive what you are worth and be clear and firm.

OK, my laugh of the day has to be the financial Web site that would like to pay $500 for 10 articles. Gee, that's just about 1/10th of what would be appropriate to get knowledge of financing vehicles, the public markets, investment products, etc.

I love it when folks want specialized knowledge but would like to pay us in eggs...

Jodee,

Thanks for the subheadings, I love them! It makes the process much quicker, allowing us to skim through those on-site jobs thousands of miles away and focus on the leads that we're more likely to be competitive for.

@Matti--How much work is writing the additional bio? While I agree that technically he should pay for the work, I also recommend going out of your way for a client, particularly a new one. If it's not that involved, or time-consuming, I'd consider doing it just to solidify your relationship and give yourself a name as the guy that's going above and beyond. Just a thought, for what it's worth.

LaToya: I think it's a scam ad to get people to sign up for a site. A very similar ad has been posted all over CL for months. At first, it was short blurbs needed for $10 per blurb. Now it's articles for $50-75 an article. When I originally applied, I received an e-mail back with a link to a site asking me to sign up there.

Jodee - thanks for the categories.
Of course, it being Friday, I didn't actually NOTICE the categories at first. I just sat there wondering why all the jobs this morning were on site. Then I scrolled down and read the next listing and a lightbulb went off!

Love the categories - it makes it much easier to scan the list and pick out what I am looking for. Definite time-saver. Thanks!
