My apologies if my question sounds ignorant, but here it is anyway...I'm noticing that folks are referring to greeting card prose as verse which I equate to poetry...is it okay to submit work that is not written in poetic format? I'm looking at this company's submission policy and wonderin' how I can get poetry on a 3x5 index card.

I have been writing portry since I was a child, and have been told by many people that I should publish a book. I would like to try greeting cards first and see how that goes. How do I go about geting started? I have some great material for many different occasions and would love the chance to have someone contact me regarding this matter. Thank You!!!

If I create a greeting card, and want to send it to a company to publish, I should only send it to one company, correct?

Hi everyone,
I am new to the site and am loving it so far! Great information and discussions.

I am a writer just finding her mojo. One area I am very interested in is writing greeting card verses. Although I just submitted my first five verses yesterday (wish me luck!), I have done some research and the above posting provides items you want to look for: specific instructions on what the company is looking for from the writer (i.e. humorous, childrens, etc.), submission policy (on 3 X 5 cards, etc.), pay per verse ($75 - pretty average). The only things I would be weary of are the fact that this is a new card company and may be unorganized and they do not have a reputation yet as to whether they pay their writers in a timely manner, etc. But you gotta start somewhere right? Hope that helps and good luck!

@ Jen: I think there might be some confusion here. I posted the ad on FWJ on behalf of the woman who is looking for verses. That's part of my job here.

I have never personally sold verses to a greeting card company, so I wasn't able to answer Paula's question, but one of our other readers could - thanks, Susan! :)

In order for me to answer Christine's question, I had to e-mail this employer to ask her the question. Then I posted the answer.

As for your wondering if I'm on the up and up: The short answer is yes. Always.

Hi, Paula,

Yep, I've sold a number of greetings to card companies and sending in writing before getting paid is standard procedure. They have to decide if they will accept any from the batch the writer sends and then they can send payment. The repsonse varies from company to company. I've gotten an acceptance in a week and other times in several months and sometimes they don't respond at all. Hope that helps.

I don't know....I tend to be a little skeptical like Mac. Why didn't Jodee respond to Paula's question? She responded to Christine but not Paula's regarding compensation and/or confirmation of receipt. If you're on the level, you should respond to all inquiries, not be selective.

Has anyone out there sold any verses to a greeting card company? If so, how long does it normally take for a response, if the company buys any of one's written verses? I sent some to this company about two weeks ago. I know it's still early, but just wondering.

I wouldn't worry too much, I've sent out many poems and haven't had one stolen yet. You have to send out the completed verse in order for them to decide whether or not they want to purchase it. If you're really worried you could conduct your own investigation of the company before sending out any work. If you're dealing with professionals you won't have a problem.

Actually, that's pretty standard for greeting cards. I mean, it's not like you can really query a poem. They have to see the work to decide if they like it.
