by Deborah Ng When I first began writing for the web, it was just as practice. A way to earn money and get my rhythm going while querying magazines. This was about nine years ago, and my fellow web writers all had the same goal. To earn some money, practice writing and gain experience until we break into print. As of this writing, many of the web writers I started out with have had limited print success and they don’t care. Same here. Once I started writing for the web on a regular basis, I started cutting back on my [Read more…]

Holiday Gifts for Bloggers: Blog Posts Sticky Notes
by Deb Ng I have to admit…if someone I know stuck a package of Blog Posts Sticky Notes in my stocking I’d be touched. It would mean the people in my life sort of get what it is I do. It might also add a touch of practical whimsy to my stocking. These aren’t your usual post its, they’re not even from the same company. Blog Posts Sticky Notes are from the Imagineering company. Each sticky looks like blank blog dashboard or comment form. But better. Blog Sticky Notes use advanced pencil to paper technology. No wires are involved. No [Read more…]
Focus on Substance, Not Style
“Cos we all just wanna be big rock stars….” (Rock Star, Nickelback) The term “rock star” is thrown around a lot more lately than it ever used to be. I’ve even seen ads in my online travels for job leads where a client actually mentions in the ad that they want to hire a rock star when they are looking for a writer. Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to hire (or be) a person who rocks whatever it is they are working on. Taking pride in your work and doing your best never go out of style. What we need, to start with, is someone to write a 30-40 page report on weight loss. We will provide the table of contents including a description for each part of the report. We are in need of a lot more writing work down the line so hopefully it can lead to a long-term collaboration. We had another freelancer write the report previously but it didn’t quite end up the way we expected. [Read more…]
Setting Goals for 2009
Every year around this time I set my goals. For the most part, I met most of my past goals. When I was freelancing more my goal each year was to earn $10,000 more than the year before. I’m happy to say this is a goal I always met. This year my situation has changed and therefore my goals have changed. As you know, I have a full time telecommuting gig and freelance a bit less. So do I still have writing goals? Of course. In 2009 I’m going to be concentrating less on freelancing goals and more on personal [Read more…]

Loyalty is Meaningless if Both People Aren't Loyal
This post might seem like a bit of a downer, but hopefully it will help you learn from my mistake before it is too late for you. When I first started my career, I was in a blog network that treated me really well. I considered myself a lesser partner because I had been there from the beginning. I constantly talked to the owner, and had his ear. Things were going really well, and I was happy. I wasn’t just a blogger for a network of blogs, but I was tapped into everything going on in the network. I felt [Read more…]

Do You Send Out Holiday Cards to Clients? You Should!
The Holiday Season is a great time to reach out to your clients by sending them a holiday card. If you aren’t sure which holiday they celebrate there are a number of generic “Seasons Greetings” cards you can choose from. Everyone likes to feel appreciated, and clients are no different. When you send them a holiday greeting, whether it’s an actual card that you send by snail mail or an e-mail, you are letting them know that they are important to you. Without them, you don’t have one. Take the time to thank the people you have worked with this [Read more…]
Black Friday Deals for Freelance Writers and Bloggers
Make no mistake. I will NOT be waking up at 3:00 am to brave the crowds for the latest new items. I will NOT be pushing through throngs of people to fight over the latest “big” toy for my son. On Friday, I will be home enjoying my family. In fact, I have no plans to step inside a store or mall for the entire weekend. I’m not that adventurous. However, I know a few members of this community get a charge out of all the Black Friday deals and so I present to you some items of interest: Black [Read more…]

Do things that attract the attention of others by promoting your stories, driving traffic, responding to comments, keeping in constant contact with your boss, and building relationships. Freelance Writing During the Holidays
The holiday season is an interesting time for many freelance writers. For some, it’s a seasonal work-fest as they take on jobs other freelancers turned down in favor of spending extra time shopping or with family. For others it’s stressful as they try to meet their deadlines. Freelance writing during the holidays was often difficult for me as my son was home plus I always went to away for a few days to spend some time with my sisters and brothers. I traveled with my laptop a lot! I tried to find solutions for keeping my son occupied but that [Read more…]
Query Challenge!
By Terreece M. Clarke Think about the top three publications where you’d like to be published. Got ‘em? Now take the FWJ query challenge. Between now and Christmas, research, develop and submit a stunning query for those three publications. If you are a business writer, do the challenge with three clients you’d like to land. I’m talking about serious work – going to the library to look through back issues, zoning in on a section, finding the correct editor to pitch to and carefully crafting a spectacular query. We sometime underestimate ourselves. I hear writers say all the time they [Read more…]
When Was the Last Time You Said Thank You?
by Deb Ng Growing up, my mom used to make us write thank you notes for everything. Even the lamest, last minute five and dime gift from friends of friends we barely even knew. She said regardless of the gift, it’s always the deed that counts. Someone was thoughtful to us and we should be thoughtful in return. That advice stayed with me and I carried it all through my career and also through my life as a mom. My son, much to his chagrin, has to send thank you notes as well. Saying Thank You Can Get You Noticed [Read more…]

What Happened to Blogrolls?
When FWJ began making the switch from single blog to blog network I decided to clean up a few things that have been neglected, for example, the blogroll. I hadn’t added any new blogs in some time, even though I come across great blogs every day. Moreover, I know a few of the links in my sidebar were dead. So I removed the blogroll for revamping. At the same time, I started looking at many of the top blogs and top bloggers and noticed something interesting. Most of them didn’t have a blogroll and if they did it was kept [Read more…]
