   Payment is on a lo/no/deferred basis.

   not sure what that means but it doesn’t sound good

   This is not at all a criticism of this blog – I enjoy this service so keep it up please – but some of these people must be joking. Imagine if you were asking around for a builder and telling them you’d pay them 2c a nail. They’d tell you to go jump. Don’t give in to these sharks. Only accept reasonable (or excellent) pay.

   Pay is ‘neg ….shouldn’t take much of your time’
   Not a good sign when the client wont appreciate the time and effort it takes to create fiction.. Erotic or not.

   Heather – The client isn’t a writer so I don’t expect she’d have a clue.

   In terms of wages, there’s a Web site put together by a romance author – http://brendahiatt.com.hosting.domaindirect.com/id2.html – that includes the responses she’s gotten from many authors detailing how much they make per book (1st and subsequent) and then their royalties. I asked my contact at Penguin what a typical word count is for a submission and was told at least 80,000 on average, but it really depends on the line. So if a book earned what they say the Median advance – $5,000 – that’s about 6 cents a word. They do get royalties once their books have sold more than they were paid with the advance, but the average there is 6 percent.

   This is information that anyone can find, so I’m betting those who do try to find what wages writers are making so that they can write the ads sometimes look to see what the authors are making – see things like 6 cents and figure that they can go much lower and be fine.

    On romance author wages — or any book first time around is rather low with royalties. Top ones pay $40,000 a book with new writers doing multiple rewrites.

    @Kenna – I actually got to interview Nicholas Sparks a couple of years ago. He is one of the very rare few who was offered a book contract on his first book for a million dollars. I remember him saying that he and his wife couldn’t believe the call was for real and that suddenly he went from someone barely getting by on $40k a year to millionaire. So higher contracts exist, but you have to have a very marketable idea.
