  1. Be a bit wary of the Contract Medical Writers one – they advertise regularly and I’ve yet to receive a response from them.

  2. Thanks for the leads.

  3. Thanks for the leads. I applied for the mediabistro posting.
I’m curious as to some of your experiences with some of the “content factories” – Demand Studios, Writers Research Group, any others. I applied for all of these on the 1st (I know, during the holidays) and haven’t heard back from any yet – what’s a normal time frame? Any ideas? I heard back from Textbroker right away (thanks to AnneG for her reports on that site) and have churned out about 6 or 7 articles so far – hoping to get bumped up to a “4″ soon.
Any other input is appreciated. TIA!

@Amy – You’re welcome. I’ve written for Helium when they first started. They paid based on page views and I wrote an article on a little known disease that my aunt had been diagnosed as having, which meant everyone had to be tested. My article received great feedback, but now it is 3 years later, and my earnings are up to a whopping $3.47. I’ve never gone back to them.

Associated Content I had decent success with at first, but they changed some policies and payment amounts declined. Plus, one of my articles was purchased by a magazine. While I knew full well that getting paid by AC meant they owned my article, I managed to find out how much the magazine paid AC for that article and it was about 10 times what they’d paid me. I stopped writing for them and now submit articles to the lesser known magazines myself.

I can’t get anywhere with Demand Studios in terms of submitting my profile so that I can actually access the site, though I hear their selection has greatly diminished anyway.

TextBroker’s postings have also diminished for the Level-four articles especially. I don’t know if it is a slow period or that the novelty of that site is wearing off. Since joining Textbroker in late November, I have made $100 doing smaller travel articles, and they pay through Paypal on time which is always a perk!

  5. @Amy:
I don’t think there’s any “normal” time frame. I heard back this week from someone I applied to before Christmas (a lead from here, btw, thanks Jodee!!!) and it looks promising. Last year I got a call from someone three months after I applied, offering me a great opportunity other than the one I applied for.
I think it’s just a question of getting your name and portfolio out to as many potential clients as possible.
My goal this year is to send out one response or query every day. So far so good! But I don’t expect immediate results. We’ll see if it actually brings my income up a notch from 2008.
    Good luck!

Re: The Product Description Writer (that was posted separately)

    The email is bouncing.

@Amy-I’ve been writing with Demand Studios for several months and everything started out great. However, over the past two months there have been several technical issues and very few titles to select from. Before Christmas, they said they were going through some changes to make assignments more available at a faster rate to writers. Yet to be seen. However, they do pay weekly and it is always prompt.

  8. @ Anne G: Hmmm….I e-mailed that client back this morning and it went through. I’ll find out if there is an alternate e-mail address and let you know.

@Amy – It’s a snow day here and I’m not getting much done. But, I just got an email in and it is a great example of the question you asked earlier.

This person advertised for a Copywriter back in August. I applied and never heard a word. I just received notice from them that they are interested in hiring me.

So, now comes the time when I have to decide if I can fit in another client. I’m busy with two other clients, but my biggest job is doing articles on different brands/models of audio equipment, great pay but after a while I find myself dreaming about crossfaders and headphones.

Maybe I should start using my last initial since there are a few Ericas, I see. I have formerly posted as just Erica. Anyway, I applied for the “writer for parent’s website” ad and within minutes got an email back asking my about fees, saying I looked like a very strong candidate. Is it pathetic to be excited about that, LOL? Usually I don’t hear back from anyone at all. It would be nice for this to turn into something…thanks as always to Jodee for doing the legwork for us!

Re: Freelance Writer for Automobile Site

I had a feeling this one would lead to a dead-end. You have to go sign up for a free autoquote comparison to be considered for the job. Claims after you’ve done the comparison they’ll contact you via either the phone or email. I’m sure they will but not about any writing job!

  13. Thanks so much for the feedback everyone! I’ll keep plugging away at Textbroker and continue to apply for everything that looks remotely like a good opportunity, and you can be sure I’ll be checking in here every day.

  14. Amy, I appled as was accepted for both Demand Studios and Helium.

For Demand Studios, there were never (or very few) updates to the sections for which I was approved to write. Of those topics in that section, there were never any I was remotely qualified to write. It would have taken an extraordinary amount of research for very little pay, and the style and format they require was odd.

For Helium, the pay scheme was so overly complicated and low, I retracted my application.

Beware of writing and paper mills: not saying that Demand Studios or Helium are writing or paper mills, thats just a basic “FYI” from one experienced Writer to another.

  15. Blue Mountain now has a book section. I just sold them a book (for a really nice advance!), so they’re open and looking.

    @ Amy

I agree with Erica #1 (three Erica’s who all spell it with a “c”? Unheard of!) about Demand Studios. I started with them when they were launching Livestrong.com and they were great. 10 (easy) assignments at $30 a pop every 10 days or so. When they launched the interactive site it was great at first even though the pay was less. $15 for 400 words. But you got to pick your topics. So I picked things I could write in less than an hour, and it was great.

About two months ago it was hard to find assignments any more, and the ones that were left were obscure and ridiculous. Like “how to teach nursing at a medical school in Burma” or something equally odd. I had not checked in with them for some time so I popped over there yesterday to check out the available articles. It was even worse than before.

Eh. They’re fine for extra work in the slow times but definitely not as a main source of income. You’d never be able to pay the mortgage with them, but you could get yourself a new pair of shoes every now and then.

  17. Can anyone atest to the service?
