Freelance Writing Jobs for February 17, 2009

by Deb Ng

Here we are, back where we belong. I’d like to thank the Men with Pens team once again for helping us get things back to (or close) to normal – and for doing so without making me feel like a complete fool.

And in case you haven’t been visiting the Freelance Writing Jobs home page, or the other blogs in this network, do stop by and become part of the discussion. The links are on the top menu navigation.

Here’s some leads- kinda slim again, I’m thinking because of yesterday’s holiday:

      Have a great day!

      Deb

      1. I thought it was a great list. I was able to apply for several positions. Thanks!

      2. Donna says:

I am always leery of craigslist ads that specify that they are only interested in females to do a certain type of work, especially when it is a man (Steven) posting the ad. (Female to Edit My Book) Could be totally harmless. Could be an axe murderer. One can never be too careful.

      3. Felix says:

slim? Deb you must be joking, this is a great list! I <3 this site

      4. Slim list? Not.

Glad to see you’ve worked the bugs out and are nearing a sense of normalcy!

        Go Deb and MWP!

No fools here just learners and helpers Deb.

      5. Joy says:

I agree about the female to edit book, axe murder or nutjob, I passed it up

      6. Tracy says:

I’m with the others – great list. Thanks!

      7. Lisa Spangenberg says:

Here’s the response they sent me:

received lots of interested parties, so we are going through

        Thank you,
        Employment Division

      8. Melissa says:

I finally got a job! Thanks, Deb!

      9. Jenn says:

It is good to see you back in the game!

      10. hazel says:

Deb, thanks for persevering – glad you’re back – and I agree, this is no slim list. Also thanks for the poem-post about low-paying jobs. So true.

        @Melissa, great news!

      11. Jenn says:

To Donna: Yeah, and not only that, but he says it’s for no pay! Come on, editing a 50-60 page book for free? Yeah.. right.

And Deb, again thanks for the list. I’m pretty much unemployed right now and am not having too much luck at the moment finding writing jobs, but your daily postings give me some hope that I will eventually find something!

      12. Lisa says:

This is totally OT, so sorry… but I have to vent!

I’m a professional grant writer (among other things) and HAVE HAD IT with people offering “commissions” for winning grants. IT DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY! Grants aren’t sales, with the profits going to the seller. They’re philanthropic gifts made specifically to underwrite programs and projects. They are NOT, repeat NOT, intended to pay the grant writer!!

It’s also, IMHO, completely “off” to assume that a well-written grant proposal can win a grant if the organization, the project, the staff and the budget aren’t on target. I don’t care HOW good my writing is, it can’t turn poop into gold. Grant writing is not marketing “spin.” Grantmakers aren’t suckers trying to buy high quality products for cheap.

I HATE IT that these folks believe that fundraising is somehow a get rich quick scheme.

        Lisa

      13. Mei says:

Absolutely, Lisa! With any grant application, there’s a possibility of rejection no matter how carefully/expertly it is written. IMHO, offering a cut is despicable and a grievous misuse of funds.

      14. Troy says:

That’s so true Lisa. IMHO if you cannot afford to pay a writer cash upfront, then you cannot afford a writer. Period.

      15. Jennifer says:

I hear you, Lisa. I have only done a little bit of grant writing in my professional career, and I’m the first to tell you that it’s 1) hard work and 2) not always (and often not) related to whether your organization lands the grant or not. Vent on!

      16. Dawn says:

Amen to the grant writers! If I have one more person ask me to “find money” for them without having a particular program or project to fund, I think I’m going to scream! If you don’t have a specific need, then a grant is not for you. Grants are not simply money for the asking. Furthermore, a grant writer cannot simply “search” for grants without an idea of the type of grant to look for. The grant process should be constructed around a proposed project and a relevant funding source with the same mission. Finally, grants are NOT “free” money to fund private businesses. If your business is failing because you stink at it, then ask the Feds to bail you out. Pfew! Thanks for letting me get that off my chest!

      17. Anne G. says:

@Lisa – Venting’s always a good thing. I found out last night that both of the teenagers next door (17 and 19) are expecting babies AGAIN. Their previous babies just turned a year old. My stomach clenched and I still don’t know what to make of it other than if they expect more free babysitting, I’ll scream.
