Umm, it’s monthly “ethnic” magazine, with an ‘n’. Not monthly “ethic” magazine, without. =)
thanks for the leads, Deb. I wonder why financial info for women might be labelled whimsical?
I know, I first read that and was like, Hmm, a magazine on ethics? That would be interesting!
That Freelance writers for Art and Culture Reviews sounds interesting, but in looking at the types of writing they’re “not” looking for (local newspaper, tabloid, short pieces, instructional pieces, music magazine, etc.) it makes me wonder what exactly they “Are” looking for. I’ve never seen an ad knock out so many types of writing without giving a very clear picture of what they actually want.
Hi,
The freelance writer job (telecommute -ok) is for a company called InternetBrands. I wrote two short samples for them and was promised work that never came. Yet here they are advertising for writers again! For anyone who chooses to apply to this company, I would do so with caution.
Lordy. I knew it was “ethnic” and not “ethic”. Sometimes my mind thinks one thing while my fingers type out something else!
Enjoy your night and good luck to you all!
Thanks for taking the time to put these together. Although I haven’t gotten any jobs directly from the lists just yet, I have made some valuable connections – and isn’t that just as great? Keep up the good work (and I do know it’s work).
The “Hiring Quality Writers” seems suspect. Even though they say to inquire for more information, they actually require you to “apply online.” I did, requesting more information in my cover letter, and received this obviously automated reply last night:
“Hello,
Thank you for showing interest in our project. Before we hire anyone in our company, we go through a series of questions which we expect to get a reply within the given time frame which would help us classify every bidder on the scale of 10 because we have well over 100 bidders and we would like to give everyone a fair chance and not just hire a bidder based on reviews. Time Frame we expect to get a reply : 1-2 days”
Whew! After I caught my breath, I read on. They ask for a list of reasonable things, like years of writing, hours available, number of articles you can write in a week, but then . . . “Provide us one unique article of about 500 – 600 words on the topic of Business, this must not be an old article from your old client or a copy version from the internet . . . ”
Looks like a great way to get free content from each person who applies.
I have a signed contract with Internet Brands but after one short assignment I have yet to receive more work. Though I must admit the assignment was extremely interesting and payment was prompt. They even cover Paypal fees! So I really dont know what to make of them.
I am still waiting on my assignment from Inernet brands after almost a month. Basically I keep getting the run around…. I also got that email from the first one it was from SliceDice marketing, which I can’t find online and they asked me for a piece on technology not business. I’m thinking scam with that one.
Landed the job at the Ethic/Ethnic Magazine City Masala (http://www.citymasala.com/) Deb!!!!!!!! Thanks soooooo much!
I applied to one of the leads and got it. I’m a little hesitant but excited too. Thanks!
Congrats Ashley!
I applied to the “whimsical writer wanted” and was contacted over the weekend (my first suspicious clue) and asked if I could do a short “revision” to the supplied attachment as a sample. I did, and got a reply back that basically critiqued it in a positive way. The woman (Heather Lynn Loomis) said that she’d be in touch. She originally said she pulled my resume from “literally hundreds” because of my experience. So, three days later and no word. Seems that if she was working over the weekend, it would be a priority come Monday. I’m not hopeful. It is the last time I will provide any sample, however brief. It was a craigslist ad. I’m not a fan…

Internet Brands? You don’t say? Me too. I am sorry to hear anyone else has been victim to this passive aggressive behavior, but frankly, I am happy to have company. I was beginning to wonder if it was just me. As I write this, I see several current postings desperately seeking 100 new writers. What gives? I signed a contract on 2/12—then nothing but the sound of crickets chirping for weeks. Finally got an email over 4 weeks ago now stating I would get my first assignment in 2 weeks. Once again, nada. Then I get an email this past week instructing me to submit my invoice for the past 3 weeks of work? Tried contacting 5 different people, only 1 has gotten back to me and says she can no longer help me as she has changed jobs with the company. No one returns calls either. Talk about hot and cold. Sheez. What did I do? I smell something rotten in Denmark (or in this case, El Segundo, CA).
I’m kind of surprised. I started writing for Internet brands in January and they did hit a slow spot, but the owner called me at home to tell me what had happened, why and how long it would be before they had new work.
Since February, they’ve had one assignment a week and always pay on time every two weeks.
