Enjoy your holiday weekend, whatever and however you celebrate!

Do you work on weekends such as this, cut down on your hours, or stop working all together? Lately, I’ve been taking holidays and holiday weekends off to spend time with my family. It depends on the workload though, and how badly we need the money. With the Ngs maybe becoming a one income family again, I’m working more on the weekends again. Let’s hope things pick up economy-wise so we can all sleep late on our days off!

(slim pickings again) Leads…

Good luck, all!

  1. The list is anything but slim. A lot of good leads here Deb.

Have a great holiday weekend with the family.

I just want to point out that the ad seeking a Content Creator for Sex Advice Website has AWFULLY specific criteria for the custom samples they want sent with application. The samples must have a certain number of characters and words, etc. and screams the possibility that they’ll be using this free sample on their website with no pay for the applicant.

I share your concerns on the one-income Deb! My husband’s company has been on 32 hour weeks for far too long and now with me losing my biggest client things are just not looking great.

A note on the Internet Brands. They’re in the middle of restructuring their format. It sounds like they’ll be more like Textbroker, etc. With writers logging in, accepting assignments and submitting them through their site. They’re switching to monthly payments instead of bi-weekly. And for the past month, they’ve not had much work anyway, so I’m not sure why they are hiring more writers. Hopefully they know something about the upcoming workload!

    Hi Deb,

For the past year I have been the income earner due to my husband being laid off. One income doesn’t pay all the bills but it has been doable.

  5. This month in particular I’ve been working 6 days a week, 4 hours per day (of writing. Research and blogging/forum posts add time to that estimate. I’d say I normally spend 6-7 hours in front of the computer doing “work” related activities).

I haven’t had any energy to work on my novel this morning, because frankly after 5-6 hours of typing, I generally don’t want to sit and type another 2-3. I’m debating switching to Dragon NaturallySpeaking for a good text-to-speech program.

In any case, I’m making enough money this month that I’m going to take it easy in May and play catch-up on the novel. Unless, of course, one of my clients comes through with a can’t-pass-this-up project, like the one I landed this month. Money’s money, and if it’s good enough I tend not to pass it up.

The only reason I push so hard is because we are really, really close to being 100% out of debt. I’ve said before that my wife’s income from her part time job pays our living expenses and my money is simply extra. We only have about 4500 of credit card debt left and then we are 100% debt free, and the job I took this month will pay off one of those cards, leaving us with only 2200 roughly left to pay off over the next couple of months. That’s my current motivation. I haven’t been debt free since I was 19 years old, 10 years ago lol.

  6. I mean novel work this month, not this morning :) I put aside the novel work in order to focus more on getting the debt paid off ASAP. I do have 5 short stories circulating though, so I console myself with that fact so I don’t feel horribly guilty about not getting chapter work done :)

I am very much interested to be freelance writer. But don’t know which job ad to trust. It could be a scam. Isn’t there any freelance job in India.

    Hi, Deb:

I just came across FWJ and think it’s a great resource for writers. I’m finding a lot of interesting leads and getting a fast education in sussing out the legitimate from the illegitimate gigs. I’m spreading the word to all my writer friends.

    Thanks!
