The sketchy one with $25 per project is actually an adult website reviewing thing. It must not be legit because they have posted in nearly every city page CL has for the last month or so and have continued to do so.
PS – I’ve been meaning to warn everyone about that one. Sorry for posting it in the leads in error – I was going to warn against it at the bottom of the post. They ask for samples – they’re mostly looking for free samples. After several FWJers complained I applied. When they asked for my samples, I (nicely)told them my samples were relevant and should give an example of my writing style. I never heard back.
Is anyone here familiar with Examiner.com? They are looking for pet writers in my area but the compensation description is vague: “paid a very competitive rate based on standard Internet variables including page views, unique visitors, session length and advertising performance.” So does that mean a base rate plus bonuses or is it entirely based on variables?
Hi Fiona,
I’m going to say something that might not make me very popular, but. . . Examiner.com is not worth the effort. Their compensation structure is solely traffic-based and is underwhelming at best. They are tooting their own horn with that compensation description! It’s 2.50/1,000.
Ug.
@Fiona – I applied for Examiner for a parenting gig in my area. What that person told me is that they are simply acting as a middle man for Examiner.com by placing the ads, but whether or not you get the job is completely up to Examiner.com. That made me leery. So I kept asking questions and was told that the pay is minimal (they wouldn’t give me a flat rate) and that the bulk of your pay would come by driving people to your site. You get a percentage of page views and more particularly click-throughs with the advertisers.
Anne – thanks for replying. That’s what I had suspected, and the middleman method of hiring made me a bit suspicious too.
Thanks for confirming my suspicions about that Adult site review work, my fiance is a journalism student and both of us regularly look for jobs for him here to make a few extra bucks towards our wedding. He has sent 2 reviews (which he put a good amount of effort into) in response to their ads over the past few weeks and heard nothing back. It only occured to me last night what they might be up to.
You live and learn.
Excellent website, thank you!
I applied to the multiple writers ad for EmpowHer. I got a response back this afternoon saying they want writers to contribute 2-5 articles of 250-300 words and “The writer whose article generates the most page views for the month earns a $500 compensation check.”
Other than that? “Compensation” is in the form of links back to relevant blogs, Web sites or books at the bottom of the articles.
In line with the Examiner.com conversation, Suite101.com works exactly the same way. There is no pay per article, but you are contracted to write 10 in 3 months. Your only compensation comes through revenue shares from click-throughs on Google AdSense. It took two emails and an entire day to find out how it worked. They emphasize increasing your article volume to earn more, but you really just increase your work volume for a very small return. And of course no one can tell you what an ad click is worth since each ad is different. Seems time-consuming and laborious for such an uncertain compensation.
I flad the adult reviews every time I see them. Applied, then sent in a ‘review’ with my spam catcher email. Within 24 hours I was flooded with more spam than ever.
Also, speaking of spam watch out when you place calls on HARO. A place called Freud TeeVee is scanning HARO and placing people on their lists. HARO made them delete me, but I’m still getting stuff from them for Twitter and Facebook-invites.
Erm, *flag.
Sorry, surfing with the baby on one arm!
Hi all,
I work for examiner as a national parenting examiner. The site is about what you put into it. If you post regularly and market your area like you’d do with anything else, then you automatically will gain traffic. I know the base is 2.50/1,000 or something like that but that is the base, I’ve always made more than that including bonuses. The middle man thing is just a filter because they don’t have the staff to go through each application to weed out those with actual knowledge, experience etc.
If you’re trying to pay a for a lifestyle with it, you may be disappointed but if you are looking to build a profile in your niche then you might want to consider it.
@JulieF – I hear you on the spam. I applied for a job on Monday for some company that didn’t identify themselves at that stage. Since then, I’ve been getting about 8 messages a day from Tattoo.com and so far, my unsubscribes just are not working. In fact, yesterday I went in to check my spam folder and there were three times what I usually had!
Meanwhile, I did land a job that was posted here. I’ve been proofreading court depositions for a year and really want to get out of that and into proofreading books, but few people will take you on unless you’ve worked for a publisher. I did manage yesterday to land one solely because of where I live, which is nice! Turns out the author used to live in Vermont, so I got the job.
