I wanted to take some time to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all the FWJ community moms. I don’t know if I’ll be blogging this weekend but didn’t want the time to go by without a shoutout.

Any success stories from our leads? If so, share in the comments. Also, if you’re a published author or have found success as a freelance writer or blogger, I’d love to interview you for a new series: Success Stories. If interested drop me a line at wegetletters@gmail.com.

  1. Matt says:

Thanks for the leads, Deb. I sent an email last week about the success stories. ;)

I’ve started my site at Examiner (yays!) and am just waiting for my background check. I’m already trying to get into the National sections, any hints how how/who to talk to?

A quick note – the Music Jobs USA (Music Reviewers) charges you $10 to enroll in their site and you cannot apply for that job unless you enroll. Having done music reviews for an online magazine, I know that companies do not charge their reviewers.

I’m trying to think of my jobs. I did get my Internet Brands job through this site and though it’s not incredibly high paying, they do provide plenty of work on topics I’ve found fascinating, so I really enjoy that one.

Then I did have one other that I found through here, but I dropped him. He’d offered ongoing work and started me with five articles that needed “no research.” The “no research” was a joke because I spent hours researching the topics. When I submitted the articles, I immediately got an email saying they were perfect and he was pleased. Two weeks passed and he offered me more work. I explained that until I got paid I was not about to do more work. Again, I didn’t hear a thing.

Yesterday, I emailed him saying that since he obviously wasn’t paying me, I was posting the articles on my own site. Thirty seconds later, the money he owed was in my Paypal account. I’m not kidding either, I sent the email at 1:30 when I finished my other work and the money was in Paypal at 1:31. So after a month, I finally did get that money and can pay a few bills. :-)

I do remember one more job I landed through here. It was for a magazine called Earnshaws that was looking for mystery shoppers to write about an experience looking for a specific item. I didn’t land it at first, but a couple weeks later, the editor emailed me back saying the other person hadn’t met the deadline and now they were in a panic and needed the article in five days and were hoping I could do an article on shopping with a ‘tween. My daughter and I had a blast with that assignment. Best of all, they mailed me a check within three days of turning it in.

Happy Mom’s Day to you too, Deb!

  4. Have a Happy Mothers Day too Deb.

About a month ago, you had a new upscale magazine gig listed. I was accepted with a well paying contract in hand and the job is now completed. You certainly have a lot of gems listed and I know I have received many assignments from here in the past.

    Much thanks,

  5. Happy Mother’s Day, Deb & all the other FWJ moms!

  6. I’ve been too busy writing to have any time to search for leads (knock on wood that it lasts!), either here or anywhere else. It’s a blessing to have word of mouth pay off, because I haven’t needed to look for work in months.

The last gig I got from here was for Green Diva Mom, where I write “green” recipes and health-related articles, such as http://www.greendivamom.com/2009/04/15/the-mediterranean-diet/. The pay isn’t the best in the world, but it’s generated hundreds of hits on my blog, and it’s allowed me to meet two health professionals (an MD and a cardiologist from Italy) who have fully supported my research and work, which is justification in and of itself. I took the job not for the pay, but for the opportunity to branch into a new field of writing; specifically the health/green/food field.

@ Anne: Kudos on the bare-knuckles competition and getting your payday finally. Paying bills FTW! Also grats on the fun job with your daughter.

My current “main” gig I honestly can’t remember where I found. I think it was via a link here or on another site that led me to another site where I signed up for the info kit and got started. It’s content generation, but the last two months they’ve given me 1200 USD projects, back to back, and my writing manager said as long as I want to stay busy he’s got half a dozen of the large projects to keep me going through the summer months, so I’m absolutely loving that gig. I average 25 bucks an hour doing the articles, and this month in particular is a freaking AWESOME project because I’m getting to research one of the topics I’ve been passionate about over the years: medieval history. I’m actually looking forward to the alarm clock going off each morning because it’s so much fun.

Demand Studios I signed up for a couple months back because I heard so many good things about them. Love them as well, though I haven’t had as much time as I’d like to use them. I try to do at least 10 articles a week…earns me an extra 500-600 dollars a month for about 10 hours worth of work.

As far as jobs go last year…I landed several gigs from here, as well as several from online-writing-jobs.com. I still browse there from time to time, but they really don’t have much that is legitimate…a lot of scam referral projects and the like, but sometimes you’ll find a gem or two.

I’ve already sent a mail along do you as well, Deb, for the Success Stories. I’ve actually become so successful at this that I’m debating turning it into a consultation business as well. In the last 2 weeks I have helped 4 different writers land gigs by using my advice, and offered advice to a couple of others. My wife was the one who suggested I should start charging for the consultations since my advice seems to be paying off. I think I’m going to take her advice to heart.

  7. Donna says:

Happy Mother’s Day Deb, and to all the FWJ moms! I bet I speak for all of us when I say that it is a lot of work to balance work and parenting, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Whatever downside there is, the rewards are great.

  8. Debra Bacon says:

Happy Mother’s Day, Deb and all the other FWJ moms! I am new to freelancing online (which is where I wish to remain), and have been researching for a while how to get interesting work and decent pay. I really started reaching out and responding to some of your leads last week and landed a writing gig from a listing on this site. I am looking for more work to make this my fulltime endeavor so I will continue following you and FWJ. Thanks a million.

  9. emmbee says:

Happy mother’s day all. My fifteen year old son is the joy of my life, and that’s saying something when it comes to raising teenagers!

  10. emmbee says:

Has anyone here used flexjobs? I’m thinking of taking the plunge, but wondering too, if they are legit and worth the fee.

  11. Anne G. says:

Anyone know a thing about SEO Marketing Zone? I got a very generic email from them, containing no signature or other information. All it is is a blank email with the subject: “hi i have a content writing project for you ,can i send it over?”

Not a lot to go on and I am 99% sure this is spam. I looked at their site and didn’t really find any answers to who this is or how they got the email they used.

  12. emmbee says:

    @Anne G.

I checked out the site (SEO Marketing Zone), and it looks mostly legitimate. They have an address and phone number on the site, which is usually more than the spammers have.

  13. Anne G. says:

@Emmbee – Thanks. I did look at the site, my issue is that I don’t think I’ve ever contacted them and their email was so vague, with no contact name, the all lower case message with incorrect spacing and the email just says “contact@seomarketingzone.com” so I’m not replying. I’ve gone through my email folders and I’ve never contacted that email, so unless they used a different one, I don’t know how they got my email.

  14. Krista says:

    @ Anne G.

ha! I got the exact same email this morning. I couldn’t remember applying with them, but since I reply to so many jobs figured it was entirely possible. I replied, saying I’d be happy to review further details about the project. We’ll see what I get back.

  15. Krista says:

    @ Anne G.

Just checked out their site. They charge $15 for articles that are between 300 and 400 words. In my experience, these businesses take a 30% cut, so I can only imagine what they’re paying their writers. Maybe they just sent out emails to everyone in their database because they know a lot of people won’t write for such low rates?

  16. Anne G. says:

@Krista – I went through all my sent emails, Gmail stores them all, and unless they used a different email, I never sent them anything, so I’m not 100 percent. Let me know what you find out, if anything.
