Blogging & Online Writing Gigs for June 2, 2009

Not too many gigs today, but I’m a little short on time. Here’s how my first of June kicked off – my Internet provider had service outages most of the day. Swell! Yeah, it’s only the 2nd, and I’m behind for the month – lame. Which brings me to my job tip o’ the day…

Have a back-up plan: Posting ahead is always valuable, but so is having one, a back-up place you can work if say, your Internet is out for more than a day, and two have phone numbers of important people, like editors or a blogger pal who can email your editors for you. I keep one of my best blogger pal’s numbers on my phone, because in an emergency (read yesterday) I know I can call her and she’ll skype or email my editors. All in all, you need a good back-up plan for when the testy web fails you.

  1. Sorry to hear about your computer trouble. Unfortunately, it does happen. Yikes!!! Hopefully not to often.

  2. Ditto what you said about a back up plan! In May, I had spotty service all month. I actually lost 10 days after it was all said and done.

My one editor suggested writing several articles “just in case” and putting them on disk. I could email them to him(from a friend’s computer–easy and wouldn’t tie up their computer) if the inevitable happened.

I’m working ahead as we have a baby due in August. Hoping to minimize down time during the hospital stay!

    • @Michelle – good plan about the disc, although it won’t work for all gigs. Most of my gigs require me to get in, add links, images, and so on. To explain that all to one of my editors might be a pain. BUT, it’s good maybe to save some in drafts on your platform, then your editor can just hit post. Congrats on the new baby coming!

  3. @ Jennifer–yeah, my gigs are like that too.

The one editor said that given dire circumstances, he could cut and paste into the word press and add an image from my files. He was the one to suggest the file.

It might be worth having a “contingency plan discussion” with your editor. Then again, some of my editors were like–we’ll just re-use old articles until you are up and running.

  4. Guess I’m not with it. I didn’t realize you were compiling job lists now… : )
