It’s a cool, rainy Tuesday. It kind of puts a damper on some summery plans, but I always have a backup plan ready. I also have a backup plan for my writing. Do you? For instance, what happens if your clients don’t have work for you? What happens if the content site you write for stops accepting submissions? What happens if those of us who provide daily job leads take a collective day off? Do you have a backup plan? If writing is your livelihood, you might consider putting one in place. Not a great day, leads-wise, but still some good stuff.

Deb, I’ve been ‘away’ for a bit. Lots of summer activities and other stuff, most of which has finally peaked and things are slowing down. Plus having both kids out of school really cuts into my working hours. Just want to say thanks for always providing such great stuff. I love the breakdown by category. Makes it easier for me to skim past the ‘tech writer’ posts and leave that to the experts. Thanks again for all you do. What an invaluable service you provide.
Re: Cutting Edge
The guy emailed me stating I should start writing 500 word (minimum) articles related to Twitter and Social Media or Dogs. If he likes any of them, he’ll offer a price for them. So it’s not a guaranteed writing position, more of a Russian Roulette type where you might get paid, but you might not.

As to what to do when work “dries” up from your usual clients, I go on a hunt and look for work in alternative locations. My back-up plan is to go back into preK teaching or project management with a hi-el publisher/vendor (of course this latter plan is getting harder and harder).
I applied for the Cutting Edge job as well and got the same response so I sent him something on The Non-verbal Communication of Dogs (not exact title). I got a response back saying “While we appreciate your interest and your submission, we don’t feel your style of writing fits exactly what we are looking for.
Good luck placing your article elsewhere.” Nothing else. There really isn’t much on the site regarding what types of articles they are looking for so it would have been nice to have some feed back. I’m going to ask him if there is something in particular that he is looking for but seeing as I asked him three questions before I sent the article off and only had one answered I’m not expecting much of a response. But I’ll let y’all know if I hear something more specific.
@Mel – PLEASE take my rain. So far since summer vacation started we’ve had weeks of rain and very little sunshine. It’s been much cooler than usual, it rains non-stop and last I knew we were up to 9.5 inches of rain in June (10 days of sun) and July (6 sunny days so far) – four inches above the average. Sunday was supposed to be sunny, but it rained. Monday was the first nice weather we’d had in over a week but it ended with evening thunderstorms.
They said sun today too, but it’s 63 right now and pouring rain yet again.
Hot here. We went hiking on Saturday up in the mountains and it were waaaarm.
Love the categories as well. It’s nice because I can skip the ones I’m not interested in and just skim through and see if there are any that intrigue me enough to warrant digging out the resume.
Backup plans? Many. Got a cook-book about to launch in September. Fiction sales are slowly happening. Wife’s part-time job is good. I’m helping her launch her Etsy shop at the end of the month. She’s actually debating quitting her part-time job and just doing hand-made crafted goods full-time. I help her make things quite a bit, and we’ve been stockpiling quite a lot of merchandise to stick up for sale here in a few weeks.
Planning 2 magazines. Debating starting a consultation business. We’ve been talking about investing in some real-estate next year. Lots and lots and lots of other money making things going on other than freelance writing in my world.
@Ann G–Here in central Texas we are in a stage 4 drought (this was after a hot summer and drought last year) and for the past two months, more days have been above 100 than not. The state has had a summer cool front move through, but it has been raining everywhere but in the Austin/just north of Austin region. At least for this week it has only been highs in the 90s.
