Freelance Writing Jobs for July 24, 2009

Don’t you hate it when you find your content, that you worked so hard to write, being used on someone else’s blog without permission? This happened to me this morning. Many writers feel they have no recourse in this day and age and if someone is reprinting their work without permission, it’s just something they’ll have to put up with. This isn’t true at all. If someone has stolen your words, you can go after them. Jonathon Bailey, from Plagiarism Today, has a great set of stock DMCA letters available for just this very thing. First send the letter to the offending party. Give them a day or two to remove your content. If they refuse to do so, send a notice to that blog or website’s host and also to the various search engines. They will also contact the person who stole your content. The offender has to comply or risk having his hosting yanked and not getting indexed with the search engine. I sent a Cease and Desist this morning and will see it through to the end, if I have to. Don’t let anyone get away with stealing your hard work.

Also, it appears one of the listings yesterday was for a term paper mill. FWJ doesn’t not believe in nor does it endorse the practice of students cheating or paying others to do their homework. I’m so sorry this ad got through.

Thanks so much for the link to Jonathon Bailey’s site — I was on it for about 3 minutes and found answers to a couple of questions that have been bugging me. Thanks too for dividing up the leads with heading — makes it so much easier to find what I’m looking for.

  2. Awesome list of opportunities Deb! Wishing everyone success today as you follow up on your job leads.

  3. Susan on said:

I hope the offending blog takes down the copied content ASAP, Deb! They picked the wrong person to copy (not that there’s a right person, of course). Thanks for leads this week!

If you’re an “idle” candidate, check out #3. Hard to resist, I’m thinking.

Thanks for the leads and the categories!

    I’m currently a pre-law student studying copyright/intellectual property law. Someday I will represent all of you… ;)

Also, anyone write for BrightHub? I just got “hired” but I’m finding it’s a bit difficult to figure out what all I need to do; used to writing for the Examiner which is pretty easy to navigate.

  6. Plagiarism is a serious issue. Everything is re-written at some point or another (honestly, how many adaptions of Broadway shows like “Show Boat” have come out over the years, all a vague representation of the original), but to directly copy/paste someone else’s work without giving credit where credit is due…that’s just slimy.

Citing sources is a *huge* issue with most website content these days, as I’d say a good portion of what’s floating out there is just rehashed Wiki content, and considering Wiki doesn’t require people to cite their sources, it can lead to some wildly inaccurate information.

Then again, it’s the 21st century. Nobody wants to take the time to go to the library and actually dig through dusty old tomes and spend hours upon hours of research when they can literally take 15 seconds to quick-browse the topic via Google.

  7. Super possibilities on this list. Fingers crossed!

  8. Hi-all fellow bloggers/writers.I have an alert to pass along to you, please I must ask you not to do any work, for Atlantic Publishing Company. They don’t pay,I recently did 3)book reviews for them and have not been paid.I did protocol, sending them two-friendly warnings before taking legal-action.Since this monday,I’ve tried collecting nothing”thus far.they even sent a bogus, paypal confirmation email,I knew it was’nt real words were mis-spelled etc.those who use pp/know how their invoice looks. When talking to their customer service person, they confirmed this as well as them(apc)not having a pp account. The ad was posted here on the site Apr 30,09,”things happen”.I just felt it was my duty,to inform you all.If anyone needs, reasonable giftbaskets(24/7)All occaisons check out http://blondedivatoo.wordpress.com

  9. Great list, Deb! thanks so much
and so sorry about your plagiarism problem. I’ll bookmark that site = and hope never to need it.

  10. Imitation might be the sincerest form of flattery, but stealing is criminal. I hope they learn their lesson.

  11. here’s a reply to one of the add’s a writing project in case anyone is interested, not sure I am keen on it
    WRITING PROJECT: Merchants Barter Exchange

Thank you for your interest in our latest writing project. For speed and simplicity, we offer the following highlights as a primer to possible further discussion in due course:

AIM: We wish to cover more ground than our current PR activities with our agency by utilizing a handful of talented writers (established and up-and-coming) to produce a variety of high-quality articles about how MBE-barter can benefit businesses around the US for publication in trade magazines, trade-specific blogs, online magazines, etc.

COMPENSATION: Based upon experience, quality and placement. For individual discussion, if you are chosen.

ABOUT US: Merchants Barter Exchange (MBE) was founded in 2000 for just such times as these, and to date is the only national barter company that conducts trade 100%. We are able to offer almost any business a very cost-effective method to trade what they have too much of (time, inventory, or capacity) for goods and services they would have spent cash on. Pre-2000 the barter industry was very, very different.

Fortunately we had the foresight and benefit of researching most of the competitive barter organizations in the US marketplace and were able to recreate barter to be a much more effective and efficient means of commerce for companies of all sizes.

Historically all barter companies dealt predominantly with very small transactions (less than $600) and involved a large cash element as part of the trade (which in our opinion is not TRUE 100% barter), they also liquidated inventory from clients and sold for cash outside of the barter economy, creating inflation in their systems (we run a ‘zero-sum’ exchange), price-gouging or charging a higher price for bartering was also rampant (we insist on the same price as cash), additionally most barter companies charge for parts and materials in cash, trading out only the high-margin elements of a transaction, thus minimizing the economical effects.

For the reasons above, we do not belong to any national or international barter associations, nor do we allow our members to trade with any other barter company. As a consequence of modernizing the industry, but keeping a ‘live’ face on the business (it doesn’t work as an internet-only service) and being rather more successful, we are not particularly liked in the industry, hence the wish to have more information available about who we are and what we do from third parties like yourself.

SUMMARY: Obviously, there is much more information to share with those chosen to work with us. Some opportunities for exclusive interviews and news scoops as they break. In addition we are currently working on a book about the business and the potential to collaborate on it may also arise.

We are looking for creative individuals that are willing to be flexible and work with us on this new project and benefit from a strong early relationship that they can capitalize upon as we continue to grow. We have plans to expand internationally within the next 18 months, and will be a $trillion company within the next 20 years.

Again, we thank you for your initial interest at this time, and after carefully perusing this email and some of the links herein, should you wish to be considered further, please email back elaborating on what specific skills you bring to the table and how you feel you can benefit us in this project.

NOTE: You WILL find bad press about us on the internet! (a bogus press release about a settled lawsuit, one alledged unhappy employee, and – unfortunately – some rubbish written by my ex-wife!) Please do not be discouraged by this nonsense, we hope to overshadow these nuisances with a deluge of quality articles praising the good we are currently doing for the US economy; we are Christian owned and operated, and very patriotic and proud to be Americans.

    Thank you!

  12. Maurice, I’m very surprised you had that experience with Atlantic Publishing. I’ve done quite a bit of editing/rewriting work for them and they’ve been very good about paying – and through Paypal. Maybe I’ve worked with a different department. I’ve never done book reviews for them. I will say they seem to be changing the way they operate, which includes piling more work on fewer editors so my “edits” have been slower in coming back. But I’ve never had any trouble being paid for my work.

  13. Does the phrase “GHOST writer for book on SPIRITuality” strike anyone else as amusing, or is it too late in the week for me…”

Seriously–thanks, Deb, for yet another great list!

  14. Nice list Deb. Sorry for the copy cat thief. Lots of stuff happening here today. On the Merchant Barter Exchange: I just replied that I was a writer and if you want my services great. But I noted to myself that it was an odd form letter.

  15. BTW: Just to let you know, I still go to the library and search through books, resources are so much better.

  16. Anne G. on said:

@Maurice – Try invoicing Amanda Miller again. I know when I wrote for them, she paid me within hours of my original email. Then three weeks later, she emailed me saying she’d never received an invoice and therefore still hadn’t paid me and wanted to clear that matter.

With that, I’m not sure if she’s the most organized person out there, but she definitely did pay me.

  17. @Anne g & Pat,thanks for replying about Atlantic Publishing.I will try to contact Ms.Miller, again to resolve this matter.

  18. Hi Deb,
As usual, thanks for a great list.. I usually find something to apply for pretty much everyday :-)
Sorry about the copycat!! Hope he gets his due soon..
Best wishes and blessings for a wonderful job

  19. I have a copycat, as well, but there is no way to contact them to send a warning. My site isn’t the only one being copied on their blog, they are also grabbing feed from WAHM Talk Radio (I’m somewhat flattered to be put in the same category!). So far no luck getting rid of them, but I hope you are able to get yours to stop, Deb!

  20. I’m upset this type of plagarism, exist. To some extent there may be nothing one can do but”be vigilant”,to get credit/paid.I was paid, today. From my diligence so,it goes to show “It pays” sometime. But we bloggers/writers,need protection some sort of regulation other than Independent-contracts of our wording. This media has become Main-stream(now)and we need health benefits, insurance too.
