  1. Thanks largely to gigs found at FWJ, I’ve found some good work. I’m a month and a half into my new gig as About.com’s ATVs / Offroading Guide (http://4wheeldrive.about.com). I’ve got a good gig with MX Affiliate Magazine. (http://mxaffiliate.com).

I’ve taken just about everything else off the table so I can work on only these two.

    Thanks, Deb!!! :)

  2. The ad for “Educated Writer” is making me giggle. I think I’m going to pass on that one.

Success stories? Here you go: I answered one of the ads posted on this forum back around February. I was hired to write two articles for a new website. That project turned into 2, then 3 weekly articles, a ghostwritten book for the client, and now an editing project.

Deb, if I don’t say it often enough – I am thankful and grateful for all that you do for the freelance writing community.

About two years ago I responded to a very vague ad posted here. I was just a novice trying to get my foot in the freelance writing door. To my great luck, it turned out to be steady, fun, weekly work at a very respectable pay. I just signed another 6 month contract with the company and couldn’t be more pleased. So thanks to you Deb, I’ve had steady writing work for the past 2 years and will continue to have it for at least 6 months more!

I’ve had some success from here, but my best job came from an ad I posted in Craigslist. I expected to get a lot of spam, yet what I got was a job offer from an overseas price comparison site. It’s been over a year now, and I still have plenty of work being sent to me every week. Plus, they pay on time every Saturday morning.

  5. Let’s see…

Moved on from two lower-paying clients for two higher-paying clients, in areas I’ve been wanting to work on for quite some time. Was actually able to negotiate a higher rate of pay than the ad listed (which I found here, btw, so thanks for that Deb), which was pretty nice.

Had an offer for full-time employment from one of my content providers. I haven’t decided if I’m going to take the opportunity or not. Job stability is all well and good, but I rather prefer the freelance lifestyle, because I set my own pace, determine my own hours, and I’m lucky enough to be good enough at what I do that I currently don’t have deadlines with any of my clients. They give me open-ended projects with no schedules attached, which means I can work as much or as little on them as I want.

My success? I don’t have to spend my time browsing job boards. Instead, I have work being offered to me on a regular basis, including full-time employment opportunities. I’ve established myself as a reliable, high-quality writer to the point I don’t have deadlines, because my clients know that no matter the size or scale of the project, I’ll get it done in a reasonable time with above-and-beyond quality. I’m actually so busy, and have been doing so well, that I haven’t even been doing Demand Studios more than two or three times per month, usually just for extra spending money when my wife and I want to have a nice dinner out or a weekend trip.

Mountain trip last weekend. Another mountain trip this weekend. A Black Sea trip planned for the first week of September. A trip to Rome planned in later September. Wife’s Etsy shop about to launch, my cook-book about to launch in September, a request for a hold on one of my short stories, success followed up with success. I’m loving life and counting my blessings. I am extremely blessed to be doing what I do and having the level of success I’m having with it. I count my blessings every day. I owe the largest amount of thanks to my wife for allowing me the opportunity to start off on this career path 18 months ago, and for dealing with the first few months, which were largely income-free while I struggled to find work. Since then, I have rocketed up the ladder in leaps and bounds, and I am continually amazed by the amount of success I’m having.

It’s great. The hardest thing for me right now is dealing with the paperwork and “hassle” of figuring out how I’m supposed to pay taxes next April, because since I’m living overseas, and I have clients from all corners of the globe, the traditional ways I used to do things as an owner of an S-corp are kind of out the window :) I’m still in the middle of talking with the Embassy and getting in touch with some tax advisors on how to make sure I do everything by the books, while still taking advantage of all the loopholes that exist. And even that’s not too big of a hassle, because I really don’t have to worry about it until next year.

Honestly, the biggest thing for my wife and I is figuring out how we want to invest our money. We hit the debt-free benchmark earlier this month, and she is enjoying greater success at her work, totally and unexpectedly out of the blue. She showed up on Monday after a week off and found her schedule booked solid with clients who had called in expressly asking for her, not another one of the beauty aestheticians (I don’t know the term…she’s a lower-level nurse-type at a dermatology clinic doing laser treatments, Botox, etc.)…ironically, this all happened after we had a talk last week about her quitting her job to work on her crafting business full-time while she finishes up her Masters. Now we aren’t so sure because all of a sudden she’s booked solid with clients. Totally unexpected!

In a time of recession, to be doing so well…we are extremely thankful to be so blessed.

  6. I don’t have any cool success stories DIRECTLY from FWJ, but I do credit Deb for motivating me to seek better work. I actually may have something very cool in the works due to other work I’m doing, but don’t want to jinx it! Yes, it’s killing me not to say. Hopefully can share some good news soon. Love hearing everyone’s stories of success — that motivates me, too! Always love to see us “little guys” succeeding.
