It’s Friday morning and, you guessed it, it’s raining outside. Isn’t it funny how one section of the country is experiencing extremely wet weather, while another is a serious state of drought? Sort of like how writing can change month after month.We all might think we have job or client security, but that can at any time.
As we get into August I’ll be looking harder for more clients and projects. Though I do have a couple of people keeping me busy, I lightened my load in a big way for the summer. This is the first summer I mostly took off since I was 14, I worked every year since thenn. I can’t tell you what an awesome summer this has been, despite the rain, as took some time off during the summer to spend time with my family and rediscover myself. I hope you all get a chance to do this as well.

Can the Country Music Writer really pay $.40/word? A 500-word article would be $200. That seems really high to me. Is it a typo and supposed to be .04/word?
@Andrea,
I doesn’t seem to be a typo when you look at the ad. Print writing sometimes pay that much. Specialist writers in many niches can get those kinds of wages. So, forgive my pun, but if you know country music, cowboy up!
@Andrea – Actually there was a time when .40/word was on the low side for magazine writing. It’s not uncommon for magazines to pay .50 to $1.00 per word. We’re just so accustomed to low paying web content we think something that used to be considered low or average is high.
We’re on the drought side, 100+ degrees in Seattle!
Andrea,
As Deb says, 40 cents a word is on the low side of what could be considered average for national publications/specialty Web sites. I have a few clients at $1 a word, a few at 75 cents and a few at 50 cents. Unless little/no research is required, I rarely look at those under 50 cents a word, except when income is tight.
But beyond cents per word (Good Housekeeping paid more than $5 per word — in today’s dollars — in the 1960s), consider the time it takes to write. Some of the higher paying gigs will likely require a lot more research. That’s why when someone defends a few bucks an article because they can write fast it confuses me. How many thousands of words do you need to write a day at a few dollars and article to make a living?
If you meet the pub’s qualifications, it’s a good gig and not a typo.
Yes, top publications pay very well, more than a dollar a word.
..and Carol Tice.. the drought-like temperatures in Seattle have WHAT to do with this site? (LOL)
I know it’s uncomfortable for a lot of folks there right now, but you have to consider perhaps it’s not a BAD thing for a place that gets over 200-rainy days annualy, huh? Hang in there, Carol!
@Doug – Carol’s remark has to do with this blog because I mentioned the weather in this post and how it’s going to opposite extremes in different parts of the country.
