The Freelance Writing Jobs Photo Contest

See that big, splashy coffee cup on the home page? It’s not working for me anymore. When we first put it up, it was part of a gallery of “coffee images”. The gallery didn’t work for us, however. We chose one picture to represent FWJ’s theme as a coffee shop for writers, but now it’s time to change.
That’s where you come in. I want a new image for the home page, one that gets us back to our coffee shop feel.
Before you send me pictures of coffee mugs, take a look around and get a feel for the place. As you can see, we’re a network of seven blogs all dedicated to writing. We have a large and lively community filled with writers helping writers, and images should be reflective of this. I looked at hundreds of stock photos over the past month and can’t find a single one that screams “FWJ!” I hope you can help.
You don’t have to be a professional photographer, you simply have to create an image representative of this community – and the FWJ community will make the decision.
So what’s in it for you?
- Your image is posted on the FWJ homepage
- You receive credit for your image on the FWJ homepage (with a link to your blog, website or service)
- Traffic to your blog
- $200
- Eternal fame and glory. (Well,I can’t really promise that but it looks good on paper.)
Now before you run out and start clicking away, we need to talk about rules. Hopefully having rules won’t put too much of a damper on things….
- Your image must some how fit in with FWJ’s “coffee shop for writers” theme. That doesn’t necessarily mean coffee photos – but coffee is good as long as it also reflects freelance writers. For example, a coffee mug next to a lap top or journal. Use your imagination and Wow! us.
- Post your image on your blog, and then come back here and post a link in the comments so we can all see, and eventually vote.
- Deadline for images is Tuesday, September 15th.
- Voting will commence on September 15th and last for one week after which time all votes will be tallied to find the winner.
- Only one vote per person.
Any questions? Post them here or contact me at deborahn(at)gmail(dot)com

Here is a link to my photo entry and I think this would be a great banner/logo for the site! This is Seamus at a beach house getting over that nasty hangover…

Submitting an entry for the photo contest. Taken at Cafe Nola in Frederick, Maryland.

This was taken at Cafe Sip n’ Play in Vancouver, Washington. I thought it epitomized my two loves in life, coffee and writing!
Here is my photo vision…
The set up:
I sat at a tall wobbly table on a tall stool in my favorite croissant cafe. My laptop was placed directly in front of me. On my right was my fifth draft of an essay, highlighter, pen, pencil and post-it notes. I placed my croissant on the other side of my essay and my coffee cup between my laptop and essay.
The action:
As I picked up my croissant and brought it to my mouth, my hand knocked over the reinforced paper cup toward my laptop.
The hot blond liquid rushed freely from the cup, stained my essay then split into two streams: one toward my laptop and the other one headed for me. I dropped my croissant, jumped off the stool knocking it backwards and grabbed my laptop!
The result:
In my soaked white shorts I examined the damage on the table. The coffee dripped over the table edge onto the floor. My now “soaked” croissant landed beside the essay. Words were smeared on the stained essay draft. And the paper cup rolling side to side began to slow down.
It was very quiet in the cafe and I looked up to see every face in the place on me. The blood rushed to my cheeks as I meekly mumbled, “Sorry ’bout that.”
I vowed to stop drinking coffee…for the rest of today.
I would like to submit my photo for the contest as well. My friend Laura told me about this when she saw my painting the other day. The painting was originally done for a CD album cover which was released this summer in Alberta, Canada.
Is it okay if you enter if you don’t have a blog or is that one of the rules? My husband is a photog and would like to enter but he doesn’t have a blog. Can we start a blog on Wordpress or Blogger just to show the pic?
You don’t have to have a blog – you can link to your flicr, photobucket or other account. Just something to show -so we can vote (and send you some traffic!)
Okay, I’ve tried this a couple of times. If this is the third time you see this, I’m ever so sorry. I’m trying to post a link for the writers-love-java photo contest.

Classy coffee shop with enough space for everybody, where the freelance writers get together to see, speak and hear all the good stuff. The slogan is just perfect for this website: “Coffee&more”, see it for yourself at:
