As a virtual assistant, and freelance writer, I too “have laptop will travel”. I love being able to move from one area of the house to another, and switching seats helps to keep me from getting too stiff. My kids are older, and I have two of the cutest grandsons ever that come over frequently, so setting a schedule is a must, though I do allow flexibility in my schedule.

I love Google Apps for handling my email and such. So far, because all of my clients pay me via Paypal, I use that for my bookkeeping along with a Google docs spreadsheet for keeping track of my business expenses.

The ‘setting regular hours’ thing is a challenge for me. I’d love to have set days again. I’ve just signed up for G.host, a virtual service which gives me the same desktop no matter what computer I’m sitting at, whether I’m home or enjoying the wifi on a library computer. So far, it works well, and I email my files to myself so I can access them anywhere.

Good advice Deb. Another bookkeeping possibility is Kbooks, a free application you can get at Sourceforge, which specializes in open source alternatives to expensive software.
