Often freelance writers mention that they have gained weight over time, in fact it was just listed as one of the top 10 ways you know you’re a freelance writer.

Here are some simple tips to prevent weight gain or help you lose:

  1. Prioritize you; make time to cook a healthy meal and exercise. Remember you are your most important asset and writing tool.
  2. Keep healthy snacks around, have a glass of water and fruit bowl on your desk
  3. Weigh yourself, prevention is the best cure
  4. Schedule meal times, its all too easy to get caught up in your writing and skip meals then eat more later on. Taking a short lunch break will not make you miss the deadline. Also research shows regular meals keeps your metabolism ticking over and helps maintain a healthy weight.
  5. Follow some food and health blogs along with writing blogs to give you daily tips and recipe ideas.
  6. Enlist support from your friends and family and make family time more active, go for a swim; take a walk in the park.
  7. Make sure you get enough sleep at night; studies have shown that lack of sleep will also contribute to weight gain. There’s always tomorrow to finish the article.
  8. Consider consulting with a dietitian to give you tailor made advice and help you keep you on track.

What do you do to stay healthy?

The most important thing I do is make sure I’m not sitting for hours at a time. I purposely schedule time to get up and walk around the block or to the store, run the stairs, do some crunches or lift some weights. It’s a great way to get away from the computer but I can still think over edits. It gives my brain and body a break and I always seem to return fresh.

  2. Donna: great tips, good for you, keep up the good work

Thanks for the tips! Most of my exercise comes from chasing kids and as tiring as that is, I don’t get the workout my body needs.

  4. Julie F: Maybe you could do something with the kids, but I agree I have a one year old its work

I definately needed this! I’ve been behind on my workout routine because of excuses. It’s more of a motivational issue for most of us. We don’t believe we’re worth the time and effort. I have to constantly tell myself there will always be a project or errand. It’s okay to walk away from the computer to take care of you. Now, if we can just believe that, we’d be light years ahead!

  6. Chris your worth it remember your health is your most important asset, get support and email reminders from your friends, put it on your calender Rebecca
