Santa Monica Pier

Greetings from Sunny California! I’m totally digging Santa Monica. I have a view of the Pier from my hotel window and met a friend for dinner at the 3rd Street Promenade last night. I’m here to attend the Demand Studios Creator Conference. I’m honored to be meeting Demand’s top contributors from around the country and speak to them today about marketing for freelance writers. I’m working on a slide show of the event so I hope to have some cool pictures for you later. And don’t forget, if you’re a member of the Demand Studios community and you live in the Los Angeles area, stop by and say hey at the Cock N Bull Pub in Santa Monica tonight from 7:30 to 10:30.

As you can imagine, it’s a busy time. I hope you don’t mind if I don’t organize the leads as usual. I also didn’t do as thorough a search today as usual, my Internet connection is sooo slow and I don’t have much time to spare. Monday, when I’m back in town, we’ll get back to the regular routine. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Leads…

    More next time!

    Good luck!

I would be wary of the long-term writer for online projects listing. It was posted under a different name yesterday, and it requires that you send an e-mail, get directions in an autoresponse on how to download a job description, and then take a survey. This is not normally how legitimate companies hire writers.

I went ahead and sent an email out of curiosity. I got an email right back with a link to download a Word.doc, which my anti-virus program said was fine. It was. It told about what the company does and what kind of writing I would be expected to do.

The survey I haven’t filled out yet. Not sure I’m going to. Name, address, how long writing, are you willing to interview people, stuff like that. Seems pretty harmless, but still not sure what all of it is about or what the company pays – or how legitimate any of it is. I’d like to know about pay and some other issues before I spend time filling all that stuff out…but I suspect they won’t tell me!

Still trying to decide on this one.

It may very well be harmless, but it certainly is non-standard and not very sensitive to people who are concerned about downloads from unknown sites. Please let us know if you go forward with this and do the survey.

I decided to pass on the survey. It might be completely legitimate, but since I can’t find anything on the company, even though they’ve ‘been in business since 2003,’ I’m a little skeptical.

Plus, the type of writing they want sounds a lot like spammy marketing gimmicks to get people to buy overpriced stuff that doesn’t really teach them anything.

I think my integrity is worth more than what they would be willing to pay. Especially since they say they frequently have books to be written – 60,000 words plus outline plus interviews plus edits, plus competitive analysis, etc in eight weeks.
