Can someone please tell me how I can get started with writing blogs, stories, anything just to get my feet wet.

Thank you Tish! no one else responded. :(

        • Heath Gordon says:

@Natalie Here is how I got started: First I got a blank piece of notebook paper. I then started writing topics that I thought I would like to blog about, numbering each topic sequentially. When I got to 100, I used that idea to start my blog. The key is to get content out there so people can see a) that you are truly interested in writing b) that you can actually write. Get a free blog from wordpress.com or blogspot.com, but eventually move to your own domain (I only started getting job offers when I moved to my own domain).

Most importantly, don’t give up. My fiction writing teacher described writing as “beating your head against the wall”, sometimes it certainly feels that way.

    Hi Deb,

Great list, thank you! We appreciate you too :-)

One snag though – I retweet your lists every day but today for some reason, Twitter won’t let me. So I hope you can forgive me for not doing so today and I’ll try again tomorrow.

  5. Kenna says:

Positive start is a To Do list with racquetball included. Smiling at my daughter when she first wakes up and perfect cup of joe!

    Thanks for the list Deb!

FYI this is a weird/fishy ad and I don’t think these people understand how journalism or media relations works. Just a FYI. They want a business related article and they want it placed in the business section of a newspaper. Huh? So they want a journalist and a PR/media relations person? Maybe I should apply and charge them double since I do both ha!

    • Anne G. says:

That sounds a little like one I had last week. The person advertised looking for blog writers to create two blogs per week, so I applied.

I received a response a few hours later saying they had two projects for me to do immediately within the next two hours at $10 an hour. The first involved going to Alexa and coming up with a list of at least 50 websites with high traffic and forums that related to the product being sold. The second job was then to review a website and fill out a questionnaire. Neither task really involved writing, so I questioned it and got a follow-up email.

Based on this email, there were three key job functions for every “writer” hired. They wanted you to write an ad promoting this company, go to each of sites and post the ad in their forums. Then post the same ad on your personal or business blog. Then finally, the third part involved sending that “ad” to everyone in your personal and business email address book. Thanks but no thanks!

In the end, that post really should have been about finding a marketing rep for their company, not a writer. Even then, sending the “ad” to all my friends, unsolicited, was a definite turn-off.

    “Biggest Loser Blogger”

    Well that’s just offensive ;-)
