Hi Deb, the Kindle is every bit as good as you want it to be, EXCEPT you still need to turn on a light to read int he dark. It is not back lit, which may be a drag, but is also part of its charm: Staring at Kindle's screen doesn't burn yr eyeballs any more than staring at a paper page.

So trust me, you want both a Kindle AND an iPhone. (Hey, it's a wish list, right?) Download the kindle app for the iPhone & presto, now you can read in the dark or on the subway or stuck on line somewhere. It will stay synced to your kindle, too. Good luck.

Hmm: how about

1) a dozen No. 2 pencils and a pencil sharpener to help the writer get started in the morning?

2) a blank book, with or without lines

3) a subscription to "The Writer"

4) an updated "Writers' Market"

5) a goose quill for writing poetry

6) a candle for writing during power shortages

7) a dartboard for plotting romance novels

8) an ISBN number

9) a badly written best seller to inspire the beginning writer

10) a virtual garret software package
