  1. Hi, Deb,

I emailed you this yesterday, but I wanted to let you know that there is an extra “the” on the home page — the last line of the opening paragraph “dedicated to the the craft of freelance writing.” I come here every day and never noticed it until yesterday. I just thought you’d like to know! And fyi, I had a typo on a cover letter that I sent out to hundreds of publishers, and I’m a copy editor/proofreader, so there you go… :)

    Have a great day!
    Lori

  2. Thanks for the list!

Honestly, sometimes I get so discouraged. The Scientific Copy Editor job (Proofreaders #1) wants applicants to submit “an example of a style guide you have produced”. I mean, really, I have copy edited using many in-house style guides, along with all the standard ones – Chicago, AMA, AP, etc. but style guides are normally an in-house product that the client give the freelancer. How many freelance writers have actually written a style guide? Sometimes I wonder if the people who write these ads know what they are asking for. They want a bioscience copy editor. I’ve been doing that type of work for 15 years, but given the parameters of the ad it seems a waste of time to apply. It is SO frustrating.

I agree. There was a job a few months back that I would have loved. It was a travel writer that lived in Burlington, VT. I don’t actually live in the city, but I’m 20 minutes away and worked downtown for years. I have teens that love going to Church Street, so I usually get dragged down there at least once every two weeks. And I’m a former travel agent and have done many travel writing jobs for other companies.

I applied anyway, but was told it was a firm rule that the writer live in the city so that they’d know all the restaurants and shops, they turned me down. In the end, they never found a writer and ended up dropping that section of the Web site, so it was frustrating to say the least.

    • Tish, I think the best thing to do in that situation is apply anyway and explain why you can’t provide what they’re asking for. “Although my previous assignments have not required me to create style guides, in my years of experience as a bioscience copy editor, I have adhered to a variety of in-house style guides provided to me by my clients. Drawing from this experience, I would be able to establish a style guide for you if that’s what you need.” Or something to that effect. The worst they can do is not hire you!

The sad, twisted thing is that they don’t necessarily want you to make a style guide for them. They want you to edit biological documents, but they want you to submit a style guide you have made to show your qualifications.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew of the legitimacy of the company from this job link: High Quality Freelance Writers – London from the 11/11 postings. The response was from Desirable Content. I received a product review assignment from them and am hesitant to accept.

    Thanks!

    Kristin
