How is everyone doing as we get closer to the holidays? I realized today Thanksgiving is next week! I haven’t done anything to prepare. After that, it’s just another month until Christmas, and I have done a single thing for that, either. I think I’m in denial. For me, the hardest part will be cutting back on the amount of work I do each day so I can shop and bake. I have so many projects happening now that I’m sure I’ll be working late in to the night between now and January 1st.
Things are going to start to slow down for the holidays. Will you be slowing down as well, or will you be taking advantage of the opportunities left behind by freelancers who are preparing for the holidays?
Demand Studios is launching a community Twitter story today. Watch it unfold using the hashtag #dscs.

Note: The two positions listed for copy editor and contributing writer in Atlanta are NOT paid positions. If you follow the link to the company website it is a ‘for-the-love’ publication. Just thought you ought to know.
The short stories is $5.00 per story and articles are 0.05 center per LINE. They also keep things submitted that are ‘denied’ without payment.
“Each character line is paid $0.05 per line. Each short story is paid $5.00 per story.
If we like the article or short story; the work will be approved with payment.
If the work is denied; it goes into a database for upcoming gifts and rewards.”

For anyone in a position to apply, I highly recommend the LoveToKnow jobs. Not only has this site given me a great foot in the door, but I look forward to writing my articles. As a result, they give ME the chance to write stronger, fresher content for THEM. I can’t praise the site enough.
I applied at LovetoKnow last week, but I haven’t heard anything. How long do they usually take to get back to you?
As far as holidays go? I’ve been blessed with a busy enough year that I’m taking the entire month of December off to focus on polishing the launch of our website, get our social networking links up and running, and knock off some much-needed work on my e-book and some fiction work.
Living overseas means no big Thanksgiving dinner, but we’ll be having one of our own regardless. Not taking any time off, however…I’m booked solid until the end of the month.
It’s been a damn good year, financially. Next year is already shaping up nicely with work booked out until the end of February, so all I can say is…happy holidays…I can’t wait for some time off.
Thanks for the leads!
I don’t know why but the holidays seem to come quicker in Canada. There is a great yawning void between Canadian Thanksgiving (early October) and Christmas. Stores are rolling out the Christmas decorations before the Halloween candy is off the shelves – it’s nuts!
I plan to write right through the holidays. I’m journaling about my move to Toronto from Calgary. And, I need to find a writing gig…or two…or half a dozen…:P
I’ve been school shopping before and seen Christmas displays just starting to be set up. It’s insane how early they push Christmas around here. And then as soon as Christmas is over, the Valentine’s displays go up.
And it’s not just stores. There’s an older couple down the road who go out and literally spend thousands of dollars on those gigantic inflatable displays. The way this neighborhood is set up, all yards have equal acreage, so we all have a little over an acre. They cover their front and side yards in various blow up electric displays. Halloween went up half way through September and is now down in favor of numerous Santas, gigantic inflatable reindeer merry-go-rounds, giant snowglobes and thousands of icicle lights on the house, in trees and even on their mailbox. When Christmas and New Year pass, they’ll move on to Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day.
They’re sweet people with no kids who say they like seeing people slow down to look. All I can think is I wouldn’t want their electricity bill throughout the year.
About two summers ago, one of the local stores started setting up back to school displays as school was letting out for the summer. Talk about a way to ruin a kid’s vacation.
That’s so wrong on so many levels! Don’t they get sick of looking at the giant inflatables? I must admit, I’m a sucker for pretty Christmas lights and they do cheer up the sometimes bleak Canadian landscape.
Honestly though – what is the rush? Do people really waddle out of their houses the day after Halloween and buy Christmas cards? We just careen from one Hallmark moment to the next in North America…
Sometimes, I wonder. We have one friend who mails out all of her Christmas cards the day after Thanksgiving. People are lucky if I get around to sending them at all most years.
As for the inflatable decorations, it’s a too each his own kind of world, but I find myself curious if these people have ever stopped to think about just how wasteful the electricity usage is. It’s not like they only run them an hour or two a day, they run them 24/7. We do everything we can to conserve here and that’s what I preach to my kids, so it frustrates me when I see such blatant waste.
Leads for Nov 17 and Nov 18 didn’t show up on the website homepage until Nov 19. Is this just me, or are there other people that are experiencing this problem?
Actually, Alik, it’s my own fault. There’s a glitch and I have to update the homepage manually each day and some days I forget. Click the purple tab for the “Writing Job Leads” page and it will bring you here to this particular blog so you can see all the day’s posts.
Also at the very top of this page are color coded tabs. This is for each different blog in the network, which I also don’t always get to update on the home page. I’m working on the glitch -and remembering to update and hopefully this is only a temporary problem.
