Things That Make Us [Sic]: A Grammar Book Review
![thingsthatmakeussic Things That Make Us [Sic]](http://www.freelancewritinggigs.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/thingsthatmakeussic-107x150.jpg)
Have you ever read a book whose ideas resonated so strongly, you felt compelled to call up everyone you know and tell them about it? You want to throw up your fist and shout, “Yes! Yes! That’s exactly how it is!” I often feel this way about novels (Atlas Shrugged is my latest infatuation), and sometimes about business and marketing books. (Seth Godin’s Purple Cow was the last one I read that had that effect.) As much of a logophile as I am, rarely does a grammar book hit me in such a way. Until I read Things That Make [Read more…]
Freelance Writing Isn't Brain Surgery, But….
Recently in my online travels, I came across a comment on a message board that got me thinking. The commenter stated that freelance writing is “an open door that invites anyone in.” This person goes on to say that well-educated and informed writers have to prove themselves. I agree that the Internet has opened up many possibilities for freelance writers. There are opportunities available online that simply weren’t offered a few years ago. And yes, many people think that they want to “get into” writing. It’s a situation of many being called, and few having what it takes to stick [Read more…]

Freelance Writing Jobs Presents: 19 Parenting Markets

Today we’re offering up some parenting markets. We’ve been listing magazine markets and other writing guidelines this week and many valid questions are being raised. For example, how do I know these markets accept freelancers, and also, how do I know the pay rate is what they say it is? It’s simple, I did some research. Research that’s easy enough for every single freelance writer to do if he or she wishes to write for certain markets. I looked up many markets on the web and, also, backed them up with a copy of the Writer’s Market – the 2010 [Read more…]

Freelance Writers: Are Just You Going through the Motions?

Here’s a discussion topic to keep you busy until I list the next round of markets. I just had an interesting Skype chat with a friend of mine who also happens to be a former client. He hires many freelance writers each year, and pays them very well, especially by some of today’s web writing standards. He’s frustrated with the lack of effort put forth by many of his freelance writers. He’s not the only one either. I’ve heard from others who hire freelancers that the freelancing craze is producing some lazy or lackluster writers. I’ve been quoted as saying [Read more…]
What is Your Freelance Writing Business Self-Image?
The vast majority of freelance writers are self-employed and the sole employee of their business. Many of those freelance writing businesses don’t really even see themselves so much as a business, but as a writer who works for someone else. There are some folks, for example, who write exclusively for Demand Studios and think of themselves as more of an employee. This isn’t too different from how many contractors see themselves. After all, when I worked in Information Technology as a network admin, I didn’t really think of myself as a sole proprietorship. After all, I had a single client [Read more…]
Eight easy tips for writing better blog posts
It’s easy for bloggers to get caught up in community, traffic, word count, social networking, keywords and oh my gosh, the Twitter scene. You may get so caught up in the business of blogging that you might be lacking focus on the actual writing part of blogging. I’m not free and clear either. I don’t always focus on content as much as I should, but it doesn’t make it right. There’s a lot of mucky and boring posts on the web, why contribute to that? This week; heck this year, why not focus on the writing part of blogging. Following [Read more…]
Blog Posts vs. Articles: Format
Today we complete the blog versus article comparison. Previous posts covered length and POV, audience expectation and today we are going to look at formatting differences. Articles have a pretty standard format. There’s the lede (lead) paragraph, some quotes, source citing, each new idea is in a new paragraph and there is a conclusion paragraph to tie it all together. Articles that have more information will also have bullet points or sub-sections with different headers. It’s a simple concept that’s not so easy to execute successfully no matter what those “Freelance Writing is Easy!” ads contend. Blog posts have more [Read more…]

19 Grants for Writers and Other Creative Types
Many freelance writers are only working for clients to bring in money while they work on books, screenplays and other writing projects. This is all fine and dandy however, it tends to take away from the personal project as we tend to put all our focus on paying the bills and funding our dreams. There are also circumstances out of our control. Many writers don’t have healthcare or disability insurance. When tragedy strikes, some writers are unable to continue writing for a living. Fortunately, there are so many foundations offering funding for writers. 19 Grants for Writers and Other Creative [Read more…]
Why Routines are Important for Freelance Writers

I was just thinking about my morning routine, I call it my “morning ritual.” I wake 30 to 60 minutes before the rest of my family, make coffee, start water boiling for oatmeal, handle lunches, feed pets and open doors for those animals wishing to use the outside, lay out clothes, and more. When the family wakes, I have another routine including packing backpacks, doling out breakfast and making sure shoes and socks are on by the time the school bus comes. I have my freelance writing routine as well. Every day, in this order, I: Check email: delete spam and [Read more…]
Are You Waiting for Your Dream Job to Come?
On the main blog on the Freelance Writing Jobs Network, Deb asked readers to describe their dream job. It has been really interesting reading the comments to see what other writers consider their ideal freelance writing gig, and it made me think about the next logical (to me anyway) question: Are you waiting for it to show up on your doorstep or are you taking steps to make the dream a reality? Waiting for your dream job to come is a bit like waiting for Prince Charming to show up on his white horse. While we may have all heard [Read more…]
How Freelance Writing is Like…

Let’s see what you can come up with. Since I’m busy compiling markets this week, I haven’t had a chance yet to do much real blogging. So we’re going with a greatest hits post this afternoon. Setting a Freelance Writing Rate Equal to the Task
Today’s freelance writing clients are looking for a lot more bang for their buck, especially those looking for web writing. Many aren’t looking for a mere writer, they want someone who uses SEO, builds traffic, moderates and responds to comments and more. Before accepting a project and setting a rate, always find out what the job entails and set a freelance writing rate equal to the task. Straight writing is one thing, but if your client is adding bells and whistles, make it clear the rates are going up. We all know interviews, research, mileage and expenses are often added [Read more…]
