Funniest Grammar Links of 2009

It’s the end of a long holiday week. If you’re a writer who needed to reach sources for interviews – hope you had lots of fun with that. Some people actually did work this week, but many did not.

It’s 20 degrees outside here in the Northeast, and even North Carolina got a smattering of snow early this week. My expressive cousin described it as “that dandruff you see on the ground.”

This makes us work-at-home types extremely happy, because we can sit around in our new “Lambie” slippers (the oh-so-cool successor to the passé bunny slippers – get with it, y’all!) and our fluffy robes and still earn money.
Granted, we may be working while the rest of the world is off, but that’s presumably our own choice.

No scraping the snow off our cars in preparation for an icy commute. No having to avoid that awful post-holiday fruitcake (Hint: If you didn’t want it, what makes you think your co-workers do?) or politely decline the office manager’s “special recipe” healthy “oatmeal” cookies made with Stevia, quinoa and kelp.

As you can see from my first four paragraphs, I’m in a bit of a silly mood. While I was researching legitimate sources for a very serious post about a crucial grammatical issue, I came across some Very Funny Things (as Winnie-the-Pooh might call them).

With it being the end of a very long holiday week and all, I figured we could all use some laughs. And so…

The Funniest Grammar Links of 2009

http://theoatmeal.com/comics/misspelling – This visually-oriented page tackles some of the worst spelling demons in a way I couldn’t with a year’s worth of columns. You’ll remember these for sure.

http://www.unnecessaryquotes.com/ – I almost didn’t include this link, because last time I visited this blog, I wasted about 5 hours reading posts and laughing so hard I nearly peed. Being pregnant this time, I thought visiting the site might be dangerous to the upholstery. And besides, I figure freelancers have enough distractions this time of year. Clear your calendar for the next few hours, use the facilities, and click the link at your own peril. There’s even some seasonal “random quotation marks.”

http://freelancewritinggigs.com/goodstuff/author/lorna-doone-brewer/ – The Freelance Writing Jobs Network has its own humor blogger, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention her. She doesn’t just poke fun at bad grammar. She gives us word games and tons of other cool stuff, too. I notice in one of her recent posts we are both plugging the same “Unnecessary Quotes” blog – but you know what? It’s THAT funny. And great minds do think alike, after all.

http://funnytypos.com/ – This aptly named site provides – guess what? – funny typos… plus misspellings, bad grammar, “Engrish” and spelling mistakes. You’ll laugh, but you’ll cry just a little bit inside. Because, in the words of the great humor columnist Dave Barry, “they are not making this up.”

http://www.themadmusicarchive.com/song_details.aspx?SongID=29538 – This one is actually from 2007, but these song lyrics sparked the idea for this post, so it wouldn’t be right not to share it. I can’t figure out how I missed it the first time around. Here’s a YouTube video of the parody song, too. But you have to read the lyrics to really get the full impact.
