Writers – What Are You Reading?

The summer is coming to an end here in the U.S., and the kids are heading back to school.  That means those of us who have been trying to juggle kids at home for the summer and our writing businesses will get some more free time five days per week.  Not only can we get more work done, but we can also get more free time since we’ll have more time to work while the kids are at school.

I’m looking forward to reading some great books this fall.  I’ll be traveling during September and October on a speaking tour for my next book that is coming out in November, 30-Minute Social Media Marketing, so I’m already lining up a list of books to have on hand to get me through the boring times at airports and in airplanes.  I’m actually considering buying a Kindle, but I’ll save that internal struggle for another post.

At the top of my list is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series by Stieg Larsson, which I’ve heard so many great things about.  My husband is listening to the audio version of this trilogy during his commute to and from work, and he’s really enjoying them.  I’ve been spending the majority of my time recently reading nonfiction books, so I’m looking forward to getting lost in some great stories!

What’s at the top of your reading list right now?  Leave a comment and share your recommendations with the Freelance Writing Jobs audience.  I’m sure I’m not the only one looking for new books to read!

I’m currently reading “The Dead Hand” by David E. Hoffman, a Pulitzer Prize winner this year about the Cold War arms race in the 1980s. It may sound dull but it’s definitely not. Fascinating and more than a little frightening. It reads like a thriller as Hoffman’s writing makes the subject come alive.

As for your “internal struggle” over the Kindle, I say go for it. I purchased a Nook back in May (right before everyone started slashing the prices on the e-readers…grrr) and haven’t regretted it for a moment. I love purchasing at my fingertips. I still buy printed books, but I seem to read a lot more on the Nook. Ain’t nothin’ shabby about that! :)

Right now I’m reading Private by James Patterson. Next will probably be the long overdue Swimsuit by James Patterson or The Search by Nora Roberts.

I’m reading The Dispossessed by Ursula LeGuin. I’ve heard good things about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (of course I have this thing about dragons) – maybe I’ll pick a copy up. Thanks for the tip! 😉

Kim, Thank you so much! It’s coming out in November (I’m doing the final edit right now — due on Monday). I’ll announce when it’s available here on FWJ. Hopefully, I’ll even get some copies from the publisher to give away on FWJ!

Currently, and for the second time, reading Stephen King’s On Writing. It’s a fantastic view into his thoughts, theories and overall technique for writing and where his writing is grown from. If you’ve ever wondered about where his plots and characters are born, give a little read into the man behind the insanity.

I’m normally reading more than one book at a time:) Currently I have dived into Freelance Writing Success by Robert Bly and The Intellectual Devotional Health by David S. Kidder.

It makes for interesting comments at the coffee shop.
