About Freelance Writing Jobs

Freelance Writing Jobs began in May 2005 as a way to help other writers, especially Work at Home Moms, find decent paying jobs.
I got sick and tired of seeing writers settle for $2 or “exposure” gigs because they felt they had no other choice. Thanks to FWJ, hundreds of writers have found gigs. While I […]

I am extremely interested in more information on how to get started in freelance writing. May I ask, is it normal to come across fees when trying to earn an income? I had looked into a site for blogging that has monthly & annual fees, is this a common thing?
I look forward to hearing back from someone.
    Thank you for your time.

    Dear Deborah Ng,
I have long appreciated this site and have landed profitable writing contracts here.
Your website is excellent, but why did you change the font of the job postings?
I speed-read. I found your old font to be superb for thispurpose: easy to scan the vertical column of blue type.
The new font and bulleting is annoying; I find that my mind’s eye is unable to scan it rapidly.

Perhaps you can reconsider a return to your long-successful format.

    Sincerely,
    HSM

  7. Clare G Says:

    Hello,
What are some of the qualifications for free lance writing? I have written a few articles on a volunteer basis for a major charity that were published in the local paper. I have gotten great feedback and wonder if this is something I could do “for real”. I am a teacher, but have had no formal writing training. Do I qualify? Where do I begin?
    Thanks,
    Clare G

  8. Deb Says:

    Hi Clare,

It’s difficult to say to a person, “Ok this is what you need to do to start out.” My biggest recommendation is to first research what’s involved. Also, apply for some of the gigs here using your local paper writing samples for clips.

    Good luck!

    Deb

  11. Lorrie Says:

    Good morning,

I just started a PR firm in May that focuses on professional writing/editing for companies’ web sites, promo brochures, etc.

I happened upon your web site and found several opportunities that looked interesting. I applied to about 4 and last Monday, I learned that 1 of them panned out. I now have one account that will amount to about 40 hours of work per month for now, with the potential for more as their company grows. Thank you for this valuable tool you’ve provided.
This was just what I needed to get my business moving forward.

    Hi Deb:

I have been viewing your sites for over a year now and have really watched you progress. I love what you do! I recently was accepted into Graduate program for my MFA in creative writing and I really would love to go back full time. My question is: How do I start doing somewhat of an online blogging deal? It would be perfect for my lifestyle with full time school and I would gain so much experience. Do you have any personal advice? Or even a starting point? I would very much appreciate it. Thanks and have a great weekend!

    Hello,

I’m interested in writing for magazines on a freelance basis. I want to know if there are any sites that might provide the following: a service where magazines post the sorts of articles and topics they need written. Freelancers then submit. The magazine selects “the best” submission and pays the writer a decent fee.

    Thanks,

It’s really easy! http://corp.helium.com/about/Marketplace/PublisherTitles.aspx

  30. Cherie Says:

    Deb,
Looking through your job lists, the only source I see is Craig’s List. Do you provide any listings other than those found on Craig’s List?

  31. Micah Says:

    Cherie,
They use many, not just craigslist. It might be because the specific day you looked there was more of craiglists postings.

    Deb,
I put you in as a link on my blog that’s just starting also.

  32. Kristen Says:

    Hi Deb,
Thank you for the resource. I have been writing for years, and am just starting to take off. I just graduated from college, but am seeing how hard it is. But am excited to be truly “free”. I am a regular reporter at a business newspaper, but would like to eventually move into freelancing regularly in the entertainment area. I hope to one day “pay it forward” by helping people, as you have. Have a wonderful day!

  33. Lorrie Says:

    Deb,
My job in the home building industry was eliminated recently and I am interested in trying to make a career out of freelance writing assignments. I stumbled onto your site via a Google link and it seems much more legitimate than many I have seen in cyberspace. I have a degree in Journalism but no “real world” writing samples. I am also curious about blogs and how to start one and what they are all about. Can you give me some advice about how to get started and what to expect when trying to secure writing assignments?

I refuse to give up,but would someone out there please take pitty on a broke ($$$) soul and tell me how to grow my blog or get a paying job…

  40. LaWanda Says:

    Hi Deb,

I love your blog and I have gotten better at freelancing. Yet, I have a question. What do you do when a potential employer keeps asking you questions about your expertise? I have submitted a few clips on the topic, and I think he is interested, because if not, why would he keep communicating with me? However, we have been going back and forth in emails for weeks now and I don’t know if I should just scrap it, or see what happens. I mean I am just starting out as freelancing; so, I can’t afford to be too picky.

    What would you do?

    Hi Deb,
I got a gig around Sept. 4 through your site with a new magazine that is to come out in March called Brave New Girl. The story was due Oct. 3 and I sent it in but have not heard back. Have you heard from anyone else who had a gig with this magazine? I’m wondering if the company has shut down?
Thanks for all that you do!

  42. Charlotte Says:

I am trying to get started in freelance writing, and so far my publications have been limited to academic writing and various music/book/film reviews, as well as some blogging. As far as stuff that was not published on the web, what should my clips look like when I send them in? For example, if I’m submitting a concert review published in a magazine, do I photocopy that page and the inside cover page of the magazine and submit that? Or do I type it up a certain way and note in the header when and where it was published?

Even if you don’t have time to answer in-depth, if there are any books or websites with answers and possibly examples of what your clips should look like, that would be great.

    Thank you for everything!

I have a blog related primarily to horses, horse care and hoof care. I need someone who can write blog posts ideally averaging around 300 words each. I’d like to stay under $250 initally for my total budget for the project and I need to get as many blog posts as possible. I also would like to get them all done as soon as possible. If all goes well, there will absolutely be ongoing opportunities for writing on this topic, and I may have work for other subjects as well. This job would be especially easy for someone who has knowledge about horses. It could probably be done in just a couple days and I will pay immediately via PayPal upon reciept of the articles. We can discuss other payment options if need be, but PayPal works best for me. Please contact me and if interested, let me know how many blog posts/articles you’re willing to do for the budget mentioned above and how soon you can do it. We’ll go from there.

  56. Benjamin Hurley Says:

    Great site you have here.

Im looking for a decent writer at the moment to come up with some media industry and career industry articles for our jobs site http://www.xpandedcareers.com - Hopefully im not posting this in the wrong place, if theres somewhere more official on the site please let me know so i can put up an official ad.

    thanks

  57. James Chartrand - Web Content Writer Tips Says:

@ Benjamin - A good way to find a writer is to view the home pages of commentators that you find write well or with insight. That often finds you a good writer without having to screen hundreds of applications for a job posting.

  58. Aaron S. Says:

Deb - I’ve been coming to your site for six months now and just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work. I really appreciate the list of jobs you compile (even though I haven’t landed one yet), the positivity of most of the others that visit, the community you have created and, most importantly, the pay-scale advocacy (pay-scale advocacy. ha! that’s kind of funny) that everyone here is involve with. It’s all very encouraging. So…

    Thank you.

  59. Rachael Says:

I really like your site and find your blogs helpful. It would be great if you would do a blog on how to make email cover letters stand out from the other 5,000 applications being submitted for each job. : )

I just discovered your site after several years of freelance editing… good timing now that a lot of my work is being outsourced overseas! Thanks for the job postings — it’s much appreciated.

  61. Toba Says:

I just came across this site and think it is such a great idea. I have been writing poetry, novels, children’s stories, etc. since I was in Junior High. I am now 40 years old. Writing has always been my passion; however I have only shared it with friends and online websites. How do I get writing gig without a resume for “writing” If I make up a resume does it have to contain paid jobs or works? What do I do?

Thanks in advance for any help you are able to share.

    Toba

  62. Natasha Says:

I have not written anything for a long, long time. All of the clippings I have are probably at least seven years old, and God only knows where they even are. However, I’d really like to start freelance writing again, where do I start?

  64. Jason W Says:

    Hi Deb,

Just wanted to thank you for the site. Thanks to the leads here, I’ve already landed a semi-regular gig that pays pretty well (about $150 per 2000-word web article) and I’m in negotiations on another project that could pay me up to $3,000. I’ve also found a few smaller gigs to round out my income. Keep up the good work!

  65. Richard Says:

This site has been a godsend. I’ve had several gigs through here, including one that might turn out to be permanent (and decent paying!). I’d advise to skip the gigs that want to pay $15 for 1,000 words–unless you can have it done in half an hour or so. As far as the ones that require upfront investing of money, skip. There are also ones that say they can’t pay but you get the benefit of your own byline and the “prestige” of being published on their site. Skip this also. You’re a writer and a professional, and you should be paid. A friend of mine who writes for People magazine tells me that a reputable publication will pay you for an article it assigns to you.

  66. Marc Evans Says:

Hi. I’m not sure how to reach you, so am posting here. Please remove our posting for Freelance Academic Editing taken from Craigslist in the past couple of days. We need to open and end job searches on a schedule and also seek to post in environments where academic editors specifically will look.

    Thanks,
    Marc

    Hi Deb,
Love this site…so helpful! Just a question…do you have any experience with Elance.com? Do you know anyone who’s landed writing gigs through the site? Thanks, kate

  69. Jessica (aka Rose) Says:

    Hi Deb,
In following with Kate’s question just above, I was wondering if you might be willing to do a post about job lead sites that charge a membership fee, like GoFreelance.com. I’d love to know what you and your readers think about these sites. Is it worth subscribing? Are they generally scams? Which sites seem to be the most honest?
I’m about to jump head first out of the corporate world and into freelancing. I’d feel better if I had a gig or two lined up before I walk out so I want to make sure I’m looking and promoting myself in all the right places.
Thank you for your amazing blog!

  70. Laura Says:

    Hi Deb/all,

I work at a university that will pay for one class per semester–whatever I want to take. I have a lot of writing classes under my belt (my minor in college), but I would like to learn web development. I know how to web surf, email, blog, etc, but I don’t know how to BUILD a website, or update and maintain one, or create content for one. I would like to know what I need to know to create a web site like this one, for instance, or be able to take freelance jobs that require “creating content for and updating websites.” I may already know more than I think, but my question is this–what software would be most helpful to learn and what kind of classes would most boost my earnings? And what does “creating content for web” really mean? Is it some mysterious web coding thing, or do they just mean writing stuff that’s going to wind up on the internet? Any and all suggestions welcome. Great site Deb!

  71. Jackie Masloff Says:

I used to get emails as to when you updated your web site, but they have stopped comming. Is there some way you could put me back on your email list?

    Thank you,

    Hello there,

I just want to say thank you for providing excellent informations on this website. I’ve nailed my first gig a week ago through and when I applied I mentioned that I got the link from here. Guess I will be a regular now :D

Again, thank you. You have no idea how much you’ve helped new freelance writers like me! :)

  73. Anton Says:

Hello, Deb and Jodee. I’d like to discuss advertising but I can’t find an email for you anywhere. Can you let me know? Thanks!

  74. Geraldine Says:

I am currently seeking a home based job and since Im a freelance writer for the Philippines, Ive searched the internet for jobs and here I am. I was wondering if you’d allow a mom from the Philippines to write for you.

    Hope springs eternal,

Hi - I am confused. I see the daily posts of “leads” for various writing jobs, but I do not see how to contact these employers… am I missing something, or am I supposed to do the footwork & locate these peoples’ telephone numbers, etc. myself???
