Putting the “Work” Back Into “Freelance Worker”

When people find out that I work from home as a freelance writer, one of the most common reactions I get is that they’re envious because not only do I not have to rush out to an office amidst the rat race every day, I must also have some very strong willpower and a great work ethic. Countless people have told me, “I could never work from home. I’m not disciplined enough to do it.” You know what? I usually wash my dishes by 3 pm and I have a mountain of dirty laundry that could possibly rival K2. I’m [Read more…]

Cover Letter Clinic Day 2

Welcome to day two of our cover letter clinic. Yesterday’s clinic was such a success. Thank you to everyone for your wisdom and insight. I’m sure by the end of the week, we’ll all have killer cover letters. Let’s get it on. To whom it may concern: I am a mother of two children under twelve, and a woman with many passions. With constant challenges in my life, I am forced to find new and creative ways to keep my family whole and healthy. I write a parenting column for (withheld), a city magazine. I have had my work published [Read more…]

Cover Letter Clinic

Here’s the first victim for our cover letter clinic. Everyone is welcome to critique but please be gentle and kind with your criticism. I am the perfect writer for the job you posted on Craigslist, because I already have experience writing the type of real estate articles you are seeking. One of my regular clients is creating a variety of websites for the Arizona real estate market, and my duties are to research area information and present it in an interesting format that includes specific keywords to help attract the search engines to the website. My goal as a writer [Read more…]

In Honor of Blog Action Day: A few things you can do to make a difference

blog-action-day1.jpg

Today is blog action day. Thousands of bloggers from around the world have picked today to get together for a common cause: the environment. I promise not to get too preachy, but the environment is a topic near and dear to my heart. I was taught from a very early age to recycle, to pick up after myself, and to look out for the environment. While it’s second nature to many of us, some still need a bit of reminding. I know it can be somewhat inconvenient to consider the environment every time we make a move, but I promise [Read more…]

Blogging Jobs are Posted

We Get Letters…

Dear Deborah, Your lack of a college degree shows through every time you post. This isn’t a criticism just encouragement to look into continuing education courses at your local community college. I admire your passing yourself off as a writer, despite your lack of skills. Truly it’s an inspiration that someone so clueless can be so successful. Yours Most Sincerely, Bruce Lee Hiya Bruce, It’s equally inspiring that someone so dead can still access the Internet. Thanks for caring, Deb Dear Ms. Ng, Hello. Freelance writing is something I’ve never done but is something I very much want to do. [Read more…]

Cover Letter Clinic

The topic of cover letters comes up often here. Many new writers want to know if they’re really so important, and if so, what should a good cover letter include. I’m here to tell you I believe them to be very important, even if they’re not specifically requested in the advertisement. Cover letters are a given. I’m not an expert on cover letters, but I believe between all of us we can work out the do’s and don’ts. I’d also like to offer a cover letter clinic so we can all learn how to craft a killer letter and land [Read more…]

Work with Your Personality Type and Maintain Your Social Skills

Work with Your Personality Type and Maintain Your Social Skills by Crystal Schwanke Working from home has its definite perks. You can watch a movie while you finish those product descriptions. You can wait until 3:00 PM to start “getting ready” for the day. You choose your hours, you choose your projects, and you can wear your pajamas (even if they are flannel!). But are writers who work from home stunting their social growth? Take an introvert—painfully shy, better with the written word than the spoken, and nervous in crowds. They tend to avoid social settings at all costs, and [Read more…]

Weekend Discussion: Affiliate Links

Hi everyone, I have some great weekend discussions lined up with some great guest bloggers. Unfortunately the time got away from me this weekend, (thanks to a little emergency) and I didn’t get a chance to post this weekend’s discussion. Since I like to start my guest bloggers off on Friday, I’d rather just throw out some reader mail today – all about the same topic. Annoying affiliate links. Let’s hear your thoughts. Our guest bloggers return next weekend, I promise. Dear Deb, There are a couple of blogs that list jobs like you. Many of the links lead to [Read more…]
