Your Turn: Is it Ethical to Vent Your Personal Feelings On a Client’s Blog?

rant

Here’s the scenario: Your client hires you to post several times a week or a month regarding a particular topic. Though the client expects your personality to shine through, you give him a bit more than he bargained for. You take barbs at people you don’t like, add your personal view to what is to be a neutral post and go off on rants that are more representative of you than the topic. Is this ethical? So, here’s the next “Your Turn” question. There’s a difference between personality and personal feelings…when you’re blogging for a client is it ethical to [Read more…]

What Happens When You Rebel?

Signing of the Declaration of Independence

I’ve been watching “America: The Story of Us” on the History Channel.  Whenever I watch a documentary or read about America’s Founding Fathers, I reflect on what was at stake at the time. I don’t know how many Americans consider the magnitude of the danger involved in this major act of rebellion. Every single signer of the Declaration of Independence committed an act of high treason. If caught, they’d be hung or shot on sight. Many sacrifices were made on our behalf, yet we don’t often think about the gory details as they’re too unpleasant and seems as if it [Read more…]

Do You Know What You’re Retweeting?

I’m thinking about retweeting today. Let me rephrase that, because I’m not looking to repeat my day and I’m not planning on using Twitter to send out links to my day over and over again. Rather, on this day, I have retweeting on my mind. I’m just back from a Skype Chat/interview with the lovely proprietrixes of Freak Revolution, Kyeli and Pace. During one of our many tangents, we discussed retweeting and whether or not people are retweeting because they appreciate the Tweet and what it stands for, or if they’re just echoing their favorite guru. Do You Read Before [Read more…]

10 Reasons Why the WAHM Thing Might Not Be Working Out

workfromhome

I left my day job exactly 8 years ago to become a freelance writing WAHM. Prior to that I worked as a freelance writer for two years while still juggling a full time day job. Freelancing from both sides of the fence wasn’t always easy, especially when just starting out. Thankfully I worked hard and stuck with it. Thankfully, I was successful and didn’t have to return back to an office job. Working at Home: It’s Not What You Think In ten years time, I’ve seen many of my fellow WAHMs start a business but go back to full time [Read more…]

Your Turn: What or Who is Your Dream Client?

I’m turning the discussion over to you today as I attend to urgent business. Let’s talk about your clients. We often talk about demanding or difficult clients, but have you ever had a dream client? How do you define a “dream client?” For me, a dream client is someone who doesn’t micromanage but keeps the lines of communication open. It’s someone who is detailed about what he wants but doesn’t nitpick. It’s someone who pays a fair wage and knows quality writing commands quality pay. It’s someone who gives credit where it’s due and pays on time. Your turn: Define [Read more…]

Should Your Regular Blog Readers View Your Adsense Ads?

I’m often asked why my regular blog readers view the Adsense ads here at Freelance Writing Jobs. Many bloggers feel that it’s somehow offensive or tacky to show regular readers these type of  ads. Instead, Adsense should be invisible to all except those who land here via the search engines. I can appreciate that there are plenty of bloggers who don’t want to subject their regulars to their entire arsenal of ads. However, that’s not how I roll. I have no problem at all with everyone who visits knowing this is a heavily monetized blog, I think it’s good to [Read more…]

Your Freelance Writing Business:Important Considerations for Choosing a Name

Yes, We're Open

I’m noticing more freelance writers are struggling with what to name their freelance writing businesses. Indeed, I’ve had the “I don’t know what to call my business” chat with at least three writers this week. As a freelance writer, I never created a business name and it worked fine for me. However, I understand most freelancers and clients see a business name as being more professional. One of the reasons I’ve been hesitant to create a name for my business is that I do more than write. I offer a variety of services and don’t want to limit myself. I’ve [Read more…]

Twitter Branding: Are You Confusing Your Followers?

Twitter icon

In the past few months I’ve noticed several freelance writers changing their Twitter handle more often than some of us change toilet paper rolls. I think that’s because when we’re confused about what to call ourselves online, or how to present ourselves to clients, we continue to reinvent ourselves. Here’s something to consider: if you’re confused about your branding, your followers are even more confused. If they don’t know what to call you, they may not call you at all. Hear me out on this one Defining Yourself on Twitter I don’t believe there are any hard and fast rules [Read more…]

Freelance Writers: How Other People Perceive Us

laptop 2

Today’s topic for discussion at the Freelance Writing Jobs Facebook Group is  how our family, friends and neighbors perceive us. It’s interesting because no matter how hard we work, there are some who feel that because we have no regular employer, we don’t actually have a job. Often times, having flexibility sometimes means people doubt you work very hard. It also means some folks feel you’re available any time of the day or night. I remember receiving a very innocent email from my son’s teacher asking me to come in and help with a classroom event because she knows I’m [Read more…]

Freelance Writers and Bloggers: Are You Backing Up Your Stuff?

The Freelance Writing Jobs blog you see here isn’t exactly complete. There are three different times I lost a bunch of blog posts. The first time was in 2007 when we lost more than a few posts after switching from Blogger to WordPress. We also lost several months of posts after the great server crash of 2008, and we lost a few posts after a crash in 2009. During the 2009 crash, though, we were able to rescue the posts thanks to our feeds and Google caches. The other times, they were lost in the abyss. These things happen. The [Read more…]

Your Turn: Are You Busier as a Freelance Writer?

Sometimes I wonder if I’m busier as a freelance writer. Balancing several clients and maintaining this blog is only a small portion of what I do during day as I also have a family. With a 9 to 5 job, I left work, came home and that was it. Now the work is always here. Even if I have no client projects there are blog posts and pages for my books to write and other ideas to put  into action. Really, there’s nothing I would rather do. I don’t want to retire or cut down my workload, because I enjoy [Read more…]

The Dark Side of Freelance Writing: Other Freelance Writers

tales from the darkside

Welcome to our latest installment on the Dark Side of Freelance Writing, where we discuss some of the negative aspects of freelancing. Past installments in this series featured freelance writing burnout and when clients rip us off. Today we’re going to discuss negativity from other freelance writers. This is something I’ve had on my mind for years but don’t like to talk about because of the delicate subject matter. Sometimes talking about these things bring out heated emotions and I’m an avoidance kind of gal. After a conversation last week with my friend Anne Wayman, I thought I’d toss it [Read more…]

What is the Future of Reading?

Kindle

In 1985, when I moved into my first apartment, my first order of business was to subscribe to The New York Times. My Sunday ritual was comforting; make a pot of coffee and relax while reading the Times from cover to cover. I saved the crossword for my hour-long commute into the city each day.  It was a ritual carried over from growing up in my family of eight. My six siblings and I raced each other to the front porch each Sunday to get first shot at the papers. We shared the different sections, read comics aloud and discussed [Read more…]
