10 Reasons Bloggers Need an Administrative Day

I woke up this morning to over 2,000 emails in my inbox. This is a few day’s worth, actually. I only answered the most pressing stuff from the past few days. I think it would take the better part of the day to go through all the mail coming in and handle other tasks. That’s why I’ve decided to implement a weekly administrative day. I hear what you’re saying, I’m busy too. So busy, a monthly administrative day is no longer adequate. This week I’ve been working with a schedule that’s going so well, I can take Sunday and make [Read more…]

Knowing When to Say No (And When Not To)

I have a problem. I’m a blogaholic. I regularly update over a dozen blogs and contribute to several others. Thankfully, I’m at the point where I’m not actively looking for work. Somehow though, work always finds me. This isn’t always a good thing. You see, by not saying no I put myself in a predicament. I have to keep up my end of the bargain and not fall behind. How can I continue to take the same time to create the same quality posts for my clients when I’m taking on new work. Fortunately, I’ve developed a system for saying [Read more…]

The Warm & Fuzzy Side of Blogging for Others

The other day I posted what I think the negatives of blogging for others are. Today – the nicer side of blogging. All the positives about blogging for someone else. I get to do something I love every day – blog. I’d blog anyhow, but the fact that people actually give me money to blog amazes me. Most days I feel pretty lucky. What other job would allow me, a single mama, to work from home like this? I get to homeschool my son Cedar, and if I blog at night we can hang at the park all day if [Read more…]

Need A Blog Break? I Do.

I was surfing, saw this, and it totally reminded me of Deb – in a good way. (Don’t hate me Deb). If you haven’t already, check out the rest of bLaugh – it’s pretty fly.

The Longest Blogging Day of the Month – the Last Day

I hate last days of the month. Actually, I should have put, “Last days of the month” on my cons of blogging for other’s list. Here is what’s on my last day of the month to do list for today: Make sure all my blogs have met their quotas: This is presenting a problem this month, because there were two days that my son was with me when he should have been with his dad. I will meet my quotas, but my schedule is off, which bites, because it means I’ll have to double check everything. Invoice: Every client has [Read more…]

Blogs and Images

For many network bloggers there’s no topic more confusing or controversial than where to find images. For many, it’s just a matter of not knowing the legal issues regarding regarding image use. The bottom line? If no one said you can use it, you probably can’t. The problem is, most network blogs require an image with each post. What do you do? Read your guidelines Your network should list places with which they have agreements in place, or stock agencies offering free image use. Be sure to properly source and credit the photographer and agency. No matter how tempting, don’t [Read more…]

What Happens When You Don't Meet Your Quota?

I have a confession to make. For March I’m behind in posting for some of my network blogs. This wasn’t intentional. It’s a snowball effect from an occurrence at the beginning of the month. I won’t go into too many details, but because I spent extra time on one thing, I couldn’t catch up to the others. By the end of the month it’s clear I’m not meeting my monthly expectations for a couple of my blogs.  While I’m making a conscious effort to work harder and meet my goals from April., the damage is done for March. Sometimes a [Read more…]

Top 11 Reasons Why I Might Quit Blogging & Open A Candy Store

Quite recently my seven year old Cedar said something akin to, “Why don’t you quit blogging and open a candy store instead?” Normally I’d tell you that candy store owner is a bad career choice for me. I barely like candy. However, there are days when the cons of blogging for others does get me down, and on those days, even candy store sounds better. Deb noted her pros and cons of blogging for others already. I didn’t read her list yet though. I figured I’d write up my own lists and see how closely we agree. I’m starting with [Read more…]

Network Blog Compensation – Let's Break it Down

Probably the most important question you should be asking when looking for blogging work is “how much does that job pay?” You may have noticed many blogging gigs pay less than other forms of writing. There are lots of reasons for this, mainly the advertising revenue a blog takes in may be less than your basic website, and definitely less than most print markets. It can work though. If you know enough about how the compensation thing works for most blogs, you won’t be taken advantage of. Let’s take a look at what some networks and individuals are offering their [Read more…]

The Importance of Knowing your Niche

I like to think I know a lot about different subjects, but there are very few subjects in which I’d consider myself an expert. Still, when I hunt for blogging jobs there are always some I’m tempted to apply for even though my knowledge is rather limited. I did this early in my web writing career, and here’s why it’s a bad idea: When you blog, you have to blog every day. Some networks or clients require you to blog several times a day. Do you really know enough about your topic to write 6 to 30 post each week [Read more…]

Are You a Chronic Malcontent?

Ever wonder how your employer or editor sees you? As someone who speaks up against people who take advantage of freelancers, I know many of the frustrations we face. I also know there are times when you shouldn’t speak up. Sometimes your network or client needs you to react with patience and understanding. If you’re constantly complaining because you didn’t receive your daily stats on time or riling up the other bloggers because you’re angry over server outages, you might be seen as a chronic malcontent. This may not bode well in your favor later. Do Something Else One of [Read more…]

5 Tips for Dealing with Weekly or Monthly Quotas

Fortunately there are ways to make it work. Post Ahead – If there’s a specific day or time where you can work for long blocks of times undisturbed, do what [Read more…]

The Pros and Cons of Being a Network Blogger

I love my job. It took 20 years of “paying my dues” working desk jobs to get to this point and I’m happy to be here. There’s nothing more rewarding than to be blogging about my passion to other people. I always said my worst day blogging is 100 times better than my best day at my office job and I still believe it to be true. That doesn’t mean it’s all rosy though. Like any other job, there are pros and cons to being a freelance blogger. Pros You spend the day talking about the things you enjoy. You [Read more…]
