january 2010

The impending holiday season means many freelancers are going to lighten their load for the next month and a half in order to handle obligations at home and spend time with family. However, does back burnering a client now mean you might lose that client to another freelancer before  January? Will there still be plenty of opportunities after the holidays are over? Taking time off doesn’t always mean you’re going to achieve the same level of success two months later. If you play your cards right and plan ahead, you can come back in the beginning of the year as [Read more…]

On Finding Time for Freelance Writing Work or Why I Don’t Wake at 4:00 A.M. Anymore

alarm clock

I credit much of my freelance writing success to being a morning person. If not for the ability to wake each morning at 4:00, I wouldn’t have been able to find quiet blocks of time to work undisturbed. I woke early almost every day for five years – until my son was in first grade and I had the house to myself full time to work on projects. It looks good in theory, doesn’t it? “Wow, that Deb’s so disciplined she wakes every day at 4 and works for three or four hours straight through while it’s quiet.” The truth [Read more…]

Getting Past the Pajama Mentality

bunny slippers

Freelancers are subject to many stereotypes. For example, most non-freelancing people feel that we have all the time in the world or that we spend a lot of time at Starbucks. Ok, well, maybe that second one is true. My favorite stereotype is the one about pajamas. I’m sure you see it all the time too. Ads that are focused towards folks who work at home inevitably mention jammies.  Our friends and neighbors direct envy in our direction because they think we don’t have to get out of our plaid flannels every day. I don’t know how this slovenly image [Read more…]

The holiday season is a busy time for freelancers. Not only because of a heavy work load, but also because of the all of the holiday preparations. Balancing work and home truly becomes a challenge. I don’t know what your life is like in November and December, but in addition to working full time I also  bake, shop, shuffle The Boy around to parties and events, attend my own parties and events, bake, shop and clean.  The holidays used to be overwhelming, but over the years I’ve figured out how to make them a little less stressful by reminding myself [Read more…]

A Three Hour Tour, A Three Hour Tour

I have learned a couple of things about staying with the extremely aged: 1. No one so much as bats an eye if you announce in the middle of the afternoon that you’re going to go take a nap. 2. If you buy applesauce and pudding for the baby, you’d better keep an eye on it. see more Lol Celebs OK, first of all, why don’t “hour” and “tour” rhyme? It never occurred to me before just now, but shouldn’t they rhyme? Totally not the point of this post, though. On September 15th, I loaded my 1 1/2 year old [Read more…]

10 Tips for Setting Up a Virtual Office

Virtual Office

A virtual office doesn’t have to be a specific room geared only towards freelance writing or another work at home career.  My own virtual office has moved from several different locations as my needs changed throughout the years. When we first moved to this house, we used a big behemoth computer in our bedroom. After my freelance writing career took off, my husband bought me a laptop and I began working from my kitchen table. When it became a pain to close and reopen shop every day to accommodate meals, I moved to the dining room, and finally, my husband [Read more…]

The day lies before us like a glorious canvas and we have many vivid colours to spray around like Jackson Pollock on a particularly inspired day. 10 Reasons Freelancers Need to Take a Break Once in a While

beach

Note: This post is a blatant rip off. I’ve been spending a little time at Men with Pens, reading about James Chartrand’s vacation. It prompted me to write a bit about my own time off. This summer, for the first time since I was 15 years old, I took the summer off. Sure, I blogged for FWJ a bit and worked on some personal projects, but I didn’t take on any client work at all. I wasn’t planning a vacation. I simply wanted to downsize for the summer. So I spent my mornings working on my projects and the afternoons [Read more…]

10 Reasons Freelancing isn’t as Glamorous as it Looks on Paper

freelancer

Tell someone you’re a freelance writer, and what do they usually say? “Cool! Wish I could do that” or “Wow! I’d love to work at home”.  Freelancing is fun for sure, but it’s also work. In fact, writing is just a small percentage of what we do to run a successful business. Freelancers love their life, but we’re also realistic enough to know it’s not as glamorous as it looks. Don’t believe me? Check it out: 10 Reasons Freelancing Isn’t as Glamorous as it Looks 1. It’s Lonely When you work by yourself day in and day out, it can [Read more…]

Day Two of My "Week Off"

I was a freelance stereotype today:  I did not get out of my pajamas.  Niiiice.

obsessedobsessedobsessedobsessedobsessed

I’ve mentioned before that I’m often up late at night working on projects. While I generally don’t like to have any distractions when I write, there are other aspects of running a freelance agency that require time, but let’s just say I they’re not rocket surgery. In other words, they don’t take 100% concentration. These tasks are often accompanied by a phone call to my mom in Florida, some Facebook browsing, or late-night viewings of whatever’s been stored up on the DVR. Lately, I’ve been getting caught up on the A&E show Obsessed. While I’ve watched nearly every episode in [Read more…]

5 Reasons Freelancers Should Keep Regular Business Hours

Yes, We're Open

We freelancers cherish our flexibility. We enjoy sleeping as late as we want, packing up and going to the shore at a moment’s notice and working wherever our laptop takes us.  This doesn’t always work in our favor, however. With flexibility comes a whole other assortment of issues, including people who don’t respect our time or job and the loss of ability to stay focused. Though it sounds like an oxymoron, freelancers might consider having business hours. While this might make us a little less flexible, it has it’s benefits. People respect your time more: For some reason people don’t [Read more…]

The Difference Between an Internship and Unpaid Labor

Discussing interns and internships are what I consider an “annual” topic. Every year at about this time we talk about interns, or rather, the folks who like to present a job as an internship in order to get away with hiring free labor.  So let’s talk about what internships are, why they are necessary and why they are not free labor. What is an internship? An internship is a job one takes, usually working for a business, corporation or the government, in order to gain experience, build up a reputation and learn from the best. The focus is on the [Read more…]

Why Customer Loyalty is So Important

I’ll say it again. There is no secret to freelance writing success. You work hard, turn in clean copy, rock the communication and you’ll do well. It’s the folks that are only going through the motions that seem to struggle.Even though the above-mentioned items are important, I one thing I learned over the last decade is that clients appreciate loyalty more than anything you have to offer. I’m going to use Jodee as a case in point. We began working together two years ago after I posted an ad at the WAHM forum. Since hiring Jodee she’s been a dream [Read more…]

Using Bad News as a Motivational Tool

by Deborah Ng So last week the Ng family received some bad news. Don’t worry, we’re all happy and healthy and will hopefully stay that way, but the news was unexpected and may result in the loss of an income. Then yesterday we received some more bad news. Another financial setback. Something that needs to get done is going to cost a lot more than we thought. Upon learning my news yesterdayI firstwent into my room and had a good cry. I recommed a good cleansing cry to everyone now and then, especially if no one is home because then [Read more…]

Guilt Free Rewards

by Deb Ng This isn’t a plug for the day job, I promise. Yesterday afternoon I listened to an inspiring interview on BlogTalkRadio. My friend Dave Navarro of Rock Your Day fame was a guest on the WAHumor show, and threw out some practical ideas for balancing work and life and getting the most from both. I especially liked the tips regarding doing what you want without feeling guilty about it. Perhaps you can relate… I like to enjoy my evenings. Whether I’m watching television or a movie with Mr. Ng or crocheting or reading, that’s my time to relax [Read more…]
