Hi Lucy,

I don't know that everyone has to start low, there are plenty of higher paying places to start. I just don't think the amount of money paid has anything to do with whether or not one is a good writing. That's a talent that's born not bought.

Very true - we all have to start somewhere, and no matter how good a writer you are, you just can't command the big dollars until you've built up a reputation. Nobody ever starts at the top, regardless of potential or talent.

I find this practice annoying too. I always skip such ads.

Those content sits fail to realise that people tend to get blind to their ads after seeing them everywhere. Less is more. Their aggressive--perhaps desperate--approach make them look unprofessional, even when they're are serious, reliable venues.

Starting a blog is nearly mandatory nowadays. From time to time I receive inquiries from prospects who've visited the blogs where I don't advertise my writing services. They have no way to know I'm a freelance writer, but still they approve my writing style and contact me to see if I'd be willing to write for them. Thus, blogging may be a profitable activity even when you don't mean it to be so--that hobby blog of yours can always open the doors for future gigs.

Comment on Freelance Writing Experience: Does it Matter Where Your Clips Come From? by Tania Mara

I had no clips when I got my first freelance writing job. I simply found an ad at a webmasters forum, applied and made sure my message would look professional enough. I noticed the other applicants didn't write too well, so I hoped my application would stand out, as it did--in fact, the employer hired me again a few days later.

Nowadays I do have clips, of course. Some are available on my own blogs, others have been published on content sites. I never had a problem, i. e., so far none of my prospects told me they wouldn't hire me because my clips come from Entry Level Site X or Low-Paying Blog Y.

Hi Rockwell,
I apologize for my assumptions. You are clearly making a lot more with your content than 99% of most writers. While it is very rare to make that much (which, btw I assume you could make more with on Suite101 because they pay higher) the content you choose obviously has high paying advertisers because the average earnings for The Examaminer is a fraction of what you're making. Kudos to you though, you're doing something right - I suggest you try spreading the wealth further with the same vertical on other writing sites.
Best!

While TW is basically right, don't just hand everything to an accountant without asking why certain things are being done the way they are. Otherwise an accountant will do things that are to his advantage, not yours (accrural accounting vs cash accounting). Also, a CPA may not be necessary, but a poor accountant will likely cost you more than a good one who charges more because he or she will make mistakes that could result in costly penalties.

I do my own personal and corporate taxes, but I also worked for H&R Block, have had five semesters of accounting (including a graduate level tax class) and don't have anything beyond basic expenses, income and depreciation. Most other writers I've met would prefer not to deal with numbers, so an accountant is good advice, but it's still good to have a basic understanding of what he or she is doing.

I think Examiner is one who does that. You go to Monster (for example) and get pages and pages of the same ad, just different locations. Good grief, we get it already; you're hiring!

Yes, I agree Deb. It's very annoying and just looks unprofessional. (Not to say Examiner is bad. I've read some really good articles there.)

Excellent! I wrote "7 Ways To Evaluate Blog Post Quality — Tuning your BS detector" last week and I'm going add this link and an excerpt to that article.

It's so cool that your criteria are orthogonal to mine. We have different perspectives. Not competing, complementary!
