Writing Gigs

Good morning freelancing friends. Jodee is spending time with her family today so you’re stuck with me once more. An abbreviated list as it’s Good Friday and the family is home. There are cakes to be baked and eggs to be colored. Hopefully there are jobs to be found as well. Enjoy your day!

Leads…

Good luck!

Hope you have a great time with the family, Deb!

BTW, is Good Friday’s a public Holiday in the US?

  2. Phil Says:

    @Mariella,

Not a public holiday per se, though stock market is closed and it’s very difficult to contact businesses because they’re either closed, work short days, or only newbies are at work (so they can’t provide much info).

  3. Mariella Says:

Ohhh, I see. Thanks, Phil! I have a handful of articles I’d like my editors to look at. I guess I’ll just email them and ask if they’re working right now.

  4. Fiona Says:

Glad I stopped by to see if anyone had posted today. I almost didn’t because I knew Deb was out of town.

  5. Fiona Says:

Or rather, Jodee is out of town. It’s Friday - I’m ready for the weekend!

  6. Richard Says:

Wow, the 22 SEO articles pay $15 per article, and each must be 1000-1100 words. I wonder if they’ll actually get any writers willing to write for about 1.5 cents per word.

    Hi all–

I have a few questions related to freelancing in general. First, I am having a little trouble coming up with a resume as I have yet to publish anything. I think I can pull that together, but I would appreciate some ideas anyway. Secondly, I know a little (and I mean a LITTLE) HTML code, but I’m not sure I qualify as someone who knows how to “write for the Web.” Can someone clarify what this really means? Is there software I should learn? All I know is blogging with a pre-made template.

Thanks and have a great Easter weekend everybody!

    Laura

On the first, I’d suggest listing other work, even if it’s not writing. You want to show you’re dependable. Then update it as soon as you get writing work.

  9. Richard Says:

What do you guys think of as a good pay rate? I usually shoot for a minimum 25 cents per word.

  10. Phil Says:

    Richard,

Depends on experience, type of writing, etc. I have one client who pays 50 cents a word for online work, $1 a word for print work. But some newsletter work is much less research-intensive, so 25 cents a word may not be bad. I had one client at that rate for a number of years, but then the client started to expect the same research and time as spent on $1 a word project. No longer a client, and the income was quickly replaced.

Typically, I consider 25 cents a word low, but will take it if other things are really slow, if it’s good volume work and it’s somewhat steady.

I find there’s a learning curve with every new client, and it’s not worth going through that learning curve for a 25-cent a word article that’s a one-time thing.

One caveat, I’ve been doing this a loooong time. I’ve taken on much lower word rates when things were scarce, but spent much more of my effort attempting to land the better work.

By the way, it’s been my experience that the $1 a word work takes about twice as long as 50-cent a word work, but not 4 times as long as 25-cent a word work.

    Hope this helps.

@Laura - Write a review for Amazon.com or something similar and use that as written work. I have had many jobs starting out what was more than happy to accept those as published writing.
