It looks like I’m getting a gig from todays postings! Thank you Jodee! It could not come at a better time.
September 28th, 2007 at 9:44 amThat’s great news, Micah!
September 28th, 2007 at 9:48 amCongratulations Micah!!! ♥
September 28th, 2007 at 10:08 amCongrats Micah!
September 28th, 2007 at 11:52 amI’ve just heard that I’ve got an assignment too. Only a small one but it brings the possibility of more later if they like my work.
I just reviewed the research/writing project. Sounds simple and was interested to see the big dollar amount ($2,500 to $3000).
But they want two THOUSAND 100 to 200 word descriptions of colleges for that price. That’s just over a dollar per 100-200 words! Yuck!
September 28th, 2007 at 11:54 amMelissa,
September 28th, 2007 at 11:59 amI considered that one too but you’re right. When you calculate the total amount of words wanted and tally it up, it’s a lot of writing for not much reward.
Yeah, sometimes figures can be confusing. LOL. They tend to hook writers with the big number only to find out the breakdown payment per piece is appalling.
September 28th, 2007 at 12:26 pmI must be a cynic. Every time I see a bigger than usual dollar amount, I scrutinize the listing to see if it’s too good to be true.
September 28th, 2007 at 2:34 pmKis>> Then I must be one too. LOL. It’s better safe than sorry.
September 28th, 2007 at 2:36 pmMy wife discourages me from a lot of the blogging jobs that pay very little. Usually, if a job offers less than $75 for an article that I will have to spend a LOT of time interviewing, researching, writing and rewriting, I usually pass. Writing is a skilled profession and should be treated as such.
September 28th, 2007 at 2:43 pmTo amend my comments, i’m referring to articles that are to be at least 700 words. I don’t have a problem with being paid $25 or $50 for an article that I can whip up in an hour or two. But it does seem that many out there want great writing done but for pennies on the dollar. Imagine telling a mechanic you’ll give him $75 to replace your head gasket (which generally involves taking the entire engine apart), and you’ll see why writers get frustrated
September 28th, 2007 at 2:46 pmWow, so many blogging jobs recently…and fashion ones at best! I might be getting a gig or two from some of your posts recently Deborah, so thanks a bunch!
September 28th, 2007 at 3:17 pmI assumed that dollar a whack one was a typo.
September 28th, 2007 at 5:20 pmAlas, no, huh? Oh, well, we are smart enough to walk it. Can anyone imagine writing 2000 stories–or paraphrasing them, or however people do it. That is a lot of typing and some thought might even be required.
Has anyone been lucky with the education blog posting? I can’t seem to contact the person who posted the ad.
September 28th, 2007 at 6:15 pmI had no luck with one - the person wanted to send a sample for you to rewrite and was going to use that to decide if you were a good fit for the job. Then the college one caught my eye, but deadline of the 21st I think it was and 2,000 summaries at that. At 100 words, that would give you about 20 days to do all 2,000. You’d have to write at least 100 summaries a day (10,000 words) to even get that job done. I wonder if they managed to draw ANYONE into that job.
Nanowrimo is coming up and I’d rather get caught up with other assignments and try to free up some time so that I can do Nano again this year and actually complete it again. Missed out last year because I took on my best friend’s toddler for a month while she trained for a new job.
September 29th, 2007 at 6:23 amI also looked at that big (sorry HUGE) gig… the amount did catch my eye, but then reading between the lines I just knew it was too good to be true!
Congrats to those who have been offered work from other postings
September 29th, 2007 at 7:12 amAnn, I’m going to do NaNoWriMo this year too. What do you know, sign-ups are on Monday. Time flies by too fast
September 29th, 2007 at 9:15 amMonday for NanoWriMO! Great. I’m looking forward to it. It will be my first time doing that.
Also, JoDee…good luck with your break in October! I have appreciated all the work you do!
September 29th, 2007 at 2:25 pmOooh..oh right. Congrats on the break, Jodee. See you in a month then. I hope you enjoy your break.

September 29th, 2007 at 3:04 pmAs for NaNoWriMo, I’ll just email you my username, Micah so we can add each other up to our friends’ list.
Sorry for being so ignorant but…what is NaNoWriMo?
September 30th, 2007 at 3:18 pmhi arge, it’s National Novel Writing Month which is on November
September 30th, 2007 at 4:28 pmBTW, do you use your username in other forums? It sounds familiar.
Thanks Micah and Mariella!
September 30th, 2007 at 5:44 pmMicah –
Congrats on the job — I hope you really did get it!
Kis –
I don’t think you’re being cynical. I think if they make a point to put a big dollar amount in the ad, they are trying to dazzle you so that you won’t notice what you’re really getting. It’s kind of like a guy in a super flashy sport car…
And finally, Mariella and Micah and Ann –
I’m doing NaNoWriMo, too. I can’t wait! I’m more worried about maintaining my usual income this year, though — between my regular work, the online writer’s conference this month, NaNo in November, and my horsey responsibilities, I’m thinking I may need 28 hour days in order to get it all done!
October 1st, 2007 at 12:27 amSpeaking of NaNoWriMo, that would be a good subject for a blog post, Deb!
We all need to exchange user names (once everyone is signed up). I’m still signed up from last year, I think. In any case, my user name is Katharine Swan and always will be. :o)
October 1st, 2007 at 12:29 amKatharine, thanks for the reminder, I forgot today’s the signup day. BTW, have you already come up with a story?
Jodee, have fun! we’ll miss you
October 1st, 2007 at 7:28 amMariella –
I have lots of story ideas. The decision was which one to use.
But yes, I know what my novel will be about.
I think I may go for 80,000 words this year, instead of 50,000…
October 1st, 2007 at 12:58 pmAh~ good for you. I’m still thinking of what to write. As for me, I don’t think I can handle 80,000 words in one month, so I guess I’ll for 50K and continue it when I get the chance.
October 1st, 2007 at 1:18 pmI achieved 50K last year, which is why I’m thinking of trying for a little more this year. I write about 1,000 words per hour when I write fiction, so 80K would be only one more hour every day. I think I should be able to do that, although I haven’t decided for sure yet whether I’ll try.
