Hey! My name is Jodee too! And spelled that way and everything. I did a double-take …

  2. Robin Says:

FYI - The first two entries are linked together so we can’t view the “freelance entertainment and food writers”

    Thanks for the big list!

  3. Jodee Says:

Well, it’s nice to meet another Jodee! My father picked out the name and the spelling…apparently, I was named after a character from a Western movie.

    Jodee,

Just wanted to thank you for this wonderful resource! I have been out of writing since the late 90’s, and have been itching to get back in, I’ve missed it. Last week I stumbled across your site, and just this morning I got the notice I was on at seejackshop.com!

Thank you for all your marvelous time and effort!

    Sean

  7. Jordan B Says:

You might want to note that there are some reports that the company Devereaux and Deloitte is a “term paper mill” of sorts — and there have also been complaints that they do not pay writers on time. FYI.

  8. Jodee Says:

    Thanks, Deb!

  9. Jodee Says:

    Sean,

    That’s great news!

Thanks for the great list today.

There aren’t often ads for grant writers, but when they do come up it has become common practice to pay a percentage of the grant if received. Isn’t this unethical? The work is being done whether or not the grant is awarded, and a grant is more than likely declined based on the merits of the organization, not the writer himself. Has anyone ever worked for a percentage of a grant, and if so was it worth the risk?

  11. Deb Says:

    Lauren,

If I’m not mistaken, it’s very bad form to pay a grant writer a percentage.

I took a grant writing course once, and if I remember it correctly, it is not uncommon for the grant writer to write his or her fee into the amount of the grant as an administrative cost. However, the grant writer should be paid whether the grant is received or not.

I never did write any grants, however. The school I taught at that paid for me to go to the course could never spare me from the classroom after that to give me the time to actually write the grants.

  13. Wendie Says:

I have been a grant writer for over ten years and I never, ever have been paid based on whether the grant was funded! You are correct it is both unethical and illegal…sort of. In many cases State and Federal Dept of Education Grants allow for 5% of the funded amount to be used as Administrative Manager Stipend. But you cannot use that amount to pay the grant writer! That 5% is to ensure that the grant is completed and compliant. PERIOD! It is expected that an organization which is seeking funding for a project is committed enough to pay the Grant writer or write the grant inside. FYI For grants over $100,000 I charge $5,000. This also includes setting up the financials once the grant is approved. Anyone who wants to pay you on a contingency basis is looking for a “rich Uncle” and not a grant writer! Tell then no! And also get half the money up front and the other half upon submission!
