Writing Gigs

Good morning everyone! There’s a good mix of leads for you this morning. There are some legal gigs, internships, technical writing leads, and opportunities for bloggers. Do check out the “Prewfreeder Kneaded” one; I was suprised I was able to understand it. I think this person either needs a lot of help or has a great sense of humor!

Leads…

Good Luck!

Someone’s flagged the proofreader one so I didn’t get to read it. :-(

OK at the risk of sounding dense (but I’m feeling dense this morning), can someone explain this rate of pay to me for the Law Magazine: Pay is calculated by taking the [total words assigned] divided by [words per hour] times $25. The [words per hour] is based at 55 for a feature and 65 for a trend or profile assignment.

@ Fiona: I just did a little bit of math here…

500 words divided by 55 words per hour =9.09
    9.09 x $25 = $227.25

    I think that makes sense….

Thanks Jodee - I was right then. I’m just not used to seeing jobs that offer such a good rate of pay (relative newbie that I am).

  5. Jodee Says:

@ Fiona: You are most welcome! :D

    Fiona,

That looks like a good one, you should be able to nearly double that rate (110 words per hour, even with interview times as part of the hour, should be relatively simple.).

Of course, if editors are ridiculous, you may want to pay someone to take the job by the end (happend to me a couple of times). But if they’re reasonable, looks like an excellent gig.

    Best of luck.

I was so looking forward to reading the “Prewfreeder Kneaded” add! Darn!

Great list to day, Jodee! Thanks!

  8. Kristy Says:

Ad, even. Guess my proofreading needs some work this morning!

  9. Jodee Says:

@ Kristy: You’re welcome! The ad was something else…too bad it got flagged so soon!

I just looked at the pay rate and have to add: Say what?

Yes, I’ve done the calculations and I’m not all that impressed (but then again, I don’t take assignments that pay less than 50 cents a word). Still, I have to ask, why the need for such a convoluted policy? I understand that they are lawyers and like to bill by the word, but that seems strange even for the legal field. And why the heck are they paying less for profiles and trend pieces? I don’t know about you, but I find that profiles are harder to write than straight forward features. YEESH.

My response to clblanchette@hotmail.com was returned saying the mailbox is unavailable. Guess I was too late and the poster was inundated…

    @David V:
It’s possible the legal “features” are actually case write-ups, which can be extremely difficult because you have to read the legal documents, decode the legalese, understand the meaning, and then write cogent English sentences explaining what happened. If so, the trend or profile piece actually could be easier — and potentially less valuable to a legal publication.
