Writing Gigs

Good morning everyone! This morning’s listings include gigs for health and sports writers. We’ve also got a couple of interesting opportunities to write about sex and to provide content for The Bar Network.

Leads…

Good Luck!

Did I read the SexyFutures ad right? They want 18 articles per day, 3-5 days per week and will only compensate the top writers for 5 hours of time?

Uh, I think I’ll pass on that one!

    Re: Llumina Press

I did a few proofing jobs for this company. They do not pay well! For example, my last job was a 52,000 word proofread for $205. They’re also slow to pay. Expect to wait around two months for a check.

  3. Jodee Says:

@ Robin: This is more of an Internet research gig. They want someone to find numerous articles each day for them to refer to on their sites.

  4. Ann G. Says:

I can’t tell. It almost sounds like they’ll pay you for 5 hours of time while they “test” you to see if you’d definitely be a good fit.

The line - “We will pay the top candidates for 5 hrs. of your time, to evaluate your article researching and productivity skills.”

Candidate to me denotes they are considering you and want to take a closer look.

But 18 articles a day in itself better come with really good pay because I think it would get easy to burn out!

I don’t know how I feel about the “fabulous female student” posting. In my experience, those who only want students are looking for cheap labor. They also state that they’re a start-up, so they can’t pay much. I wonder just how much is “not much”…

  6. Kathleen Says:

I just wanted to say thank you for posting the “Fabulous Female Student” listing. While I’m not going to be applying for it (since it doesn’t seem like my thing) I do appreciate that you put up a listing for us college students who don’t get much attention or respect. Thank you!

Has anyone tried The Bar Network job. I responded to one of their ads about six months ago and after being asked to provide samples supplied quite an extensive response, but heard zilch. Wondering if anyone has had more luck?

  8. Sarah Says:

Is it just me or has pay rates for freelance writers gone down over the past 10 years? I used to make $1000 per cover article at one magazine in town. Now, I get offers from all over the country to ddo the same for $25. Sheesh.

  9. Sarah Says:

… or it could be I don’t hit spell check often enough:-))))

  10. Matt Says:

    I didn’t want to say anything… :)

  11. Sarah Says:

    I never check when I rant. :-))))

  12. Phil Says:

    Sarah,

Rates are definitely down. Heard a report about two years ago that in current (at the time) dollars, Good Housekeeping paid the equivalent of $5 a word in the 1960s. The $1,000 jobs do exist, but they’re few and far between.

  13. L. L. Woodard Says:

In responding to the barebitsblog.com ad, the email subject comes up as “Seeking Female Writers for Sex”…and here I thought they just wanted me for my mind! lol

  14. Jodee Says:

@ Kathleen: You are most welcome. :)

@ L.L.: I was wondering if anyone else would catch that, LOL!

  15. Sonya Says:

Has anyone worked for Demand Studios? (They’re the “Health and Fitness Freelance Writer Wanted” ad.) They don’t list a pay rate anywhere that I can find, so I’m a little cautious.

  16. Peggy Says:

Sonya, several people at Absolute Write have written for them. You can do a search for the thread.

  17. Lady Luck Says:

The Fabulous Female college writers doesn’t pay upon further investigation. Looks like they’re another bunch looking to exploit people in the name of the byline.

  18. Lori Says:

I responded to the “fabulous female student” yesterday, out of curiosity. This morning, I had a response (addressed to “Mama”) saying that they had already filled all of the writer slots, but would I be interested in writing for free? Um… no.

  19. Sonya Says:

    Thanks Peggy!
