Writing Gigs

Good morning FWJers! It’s a new day and I’ve got leads for bloggers and content writers today. There are a couple of opportunities for foreign correspondents and interns. I hope you find something interesting on the list.

Leads…

Good Luck!

    w00t! Leads! :)

I love that this site is getting real popular and that you’re getting, um, how shall we say… drama?, which amounts to more popularity, but I’m here for the leads and I literally owe you a huge thanks for your help in taking my writing to the next level. Twice.

And now I can begin my day. Somehow I never feel ready to go for the day until I’ve seen the job leads! Have a good one and for all of us hardworking writers - take a minute to toast birthday boy Bill Shakespeare.

  3. Sally Says:

Thanks for posting legal writing leads. I have gotten several great gigs from this site!

Stopping by to offer my gratitude for the tireless lead snagging you guys do.

Also, I had to laugh at the thank you card lead. I certainly know how she feels.

  5. Jodee Says:

You guys are most welcome. :D It is very nice to be appreciated.

I liked the one about writing about poolside dining. I bet the research for that one could be rather, uh, time consuming…. ;)

  6. Tish Davidson Says:

Is there some other way to support you financially? I don’t have a PayPal account and I don’t want one (long story) and there appears to be no alternative donation option.

  7. Jack B Says:

Another excuse to leave a comment! Just sent in an app about the Casual Gaming writer. That’s the second day in a row (same day for me, being in Australia) that you’ve posted a great lead for me.

I’ve been reading every post on this site for a couple of months… it’s almost like a treasure box. Sometimes you open it and find something great, and it keeps you coming back!

Alas, it can be a tough life, being a young Australian niche videogame writer.

But then again, we’re all freelancers, we all know the feeling!

  8. Richard Says:

One thing I have noticed is that a few clients will want you to write an article about them, their company or something they’ve created. That’s fine, but what some also want is for you to submit that article for publication at various newspapers, magazines and websites. Once published, you get paid. Most reputable publications won’t publish something you’ve written where you corroborated with your subject–the idea is that it becomes advocacy journalism and loses its unbiased approach.

Best way to approach this is to tell a client that you’ll work with them on a press release to be submitted. Generally, once a publication gets a press release of something appealing, they’ll send the press release to one of their reporters or freelancers and have them do an entire article. The release is used as a guide as the reporter does research, interviews, etc.

  9. Ads Says:

Nice to see another Aussie that visits the site. I thought I might be the only one. Nice to see you Jack B.

Deb, Jodee I hope you realize just how “international” FWJ is.
It may be hard being a niche writer, but it’s even harder being a niche writer based in Australia when most leads are U.S based. Even those that offer the “work from anywhere” option, often mean “work from anywhere in the U.S”.
I aint complaining of course, I love the challenge and have found some good gigs through the site.
Thanks Deb and thanks Jodee from your fans in the land down under.

Drama–LOL…I haven’t really seen anything akin to that on here–go to the political boards–there’s drama! LOL…

That said, I don’t mean to sound sensitive but I have been coming on here for almost a year now, –I have said hi and had no response, made positive comments and tried to engage in interactive conversation.

NO one has ever replied to me.

Do have Body order–do I offend?

Is it because I am a musician?

Is it cause I’m black (via the website?)…dude throw a dog a bone…

I have supported and even sent people to this site–I am starting to feel like the invisible woman on this forum. It would be one thing if I have never asked specific questions or engaged in dialogs yet no one has ever responded to me.

On the Internet, such a response feels like a snub as this is literally our only means of communication.

If for whatever reason you just don’t want my support or presence let me know, by but please tell me what the heck I did that has caused me to be ignored for almost a year on this forum before I go…

  11. Deb Says:

    HI Alicia -

I’m so sorry you feel slighted. Please believe when I say there’s nothing wrong with you and and oversight is my fault.

I do try and welcome newcomers but with a blog this size it isn’t always easy. I do hope you ‘ll return and participate - we do appreciate your input.

    Deb

  12. Matt Says:

    Wow. Talk about drama!

Alicia, that was a seriously funny plea for recognition!

I guess your web site’s name, iwantluv, is still applicable to your current state of emotional neglect… :)

  13. Jodee Says:

@ Jack B and Ads: Nice to have you guys here! :) I’ll make a point of checking out the CL ads for Australia and the UK (since we have at least a couple of readers from there) more often.

  14. Alicia Says:

*hugs Matt* OMG– YOU SPOKE TO ME….

    *starts sobbing*

    I am visible–I do exist–thanks for the validation…

    I LOVE YOU MAN!!!!!

(I am just joking–I have a weird sense of humor)

Hi Deb–thanks…I was just hoping I hadn’t inadvertently offended someone…

By the bye, I knew someone would accuse me of being dramatic–not so.

Simply wanted to know what was going on–glad to know I wasn’t being singled out and dissed…

    Peace to mah homies…

  15. Matt Says:

LoL @ Alicia (Great sense of humor) :)

/hugs back, trying desperately to keep hands above Alicia’s curvy waist /

  16. Jodee Says:

@ Alicia: Good to have you here. :)

@ Matt: You are too funny! :D

  17. Steve Robinson Says:

“NO one has ever replied to me.
Do have Body order–do I offend?
Is it because I am a musician?”

I’d just like to say that “Body Order” might be a good name for a band. Just a thought…

  18. Alicia Says:

Doh! Me and my dagnabit typos…lol…

Thanks guys! Matt you are too cute…*pinches cheeks*

  19. Alicia Says:

    Body order…roflmao…

  20. Matt Says:

Wait wait wait… Exactly which cheeks are you pinching???

  21. Phil Says:

    Richard,

I have to disagree with you. You can pitch a publication to see what their needs/rules are for outside contributions. More and more publications take these because they keep staffs to a minimum. This is a huge change in the industry, but one that has certainly happened. 15 years ago, they would rarely accept outside contributions, but now several do.

But you should seek to find the publications needs before writing the article, not the other way around.

Writing, then pitching is like writing on spec. Some may have some success doing this, but I’ve always avoided it.

  22. Richard Says:

@alicia; you have to be persistent. I’d say that 85-90% of what I apply for here I never get a response back.

@phil; wow, how the industry has changed. Around 2000, when I was freelancing for the San Antonio Express-News, I was especially told by the editors there to watch for people who wanted to do that. A big change indeed. Thanks for the heads-up.

  23. Richard Says:

For what it’s worth, I shower daily and still only hear back from about 10-15% of those to whom I pitch. And I even use that after-shower body spray…

  24. Matt Says:

Richard, I think she’s talking about comments here, not pitching leads. :)

  25. Hazel Says:

Bodies (odor? order? missed that altogether …) and pinching — we are frisky today aren’t we?!!

  26. Alicia Says:

    Hi Hazel–

Yeppers, when I get all emotional and stuff, my brain gets all foggy and writes things like “order” instead of “odor”…

You should see the mass of misspellings in my angry letters…lol…

    A

  27. Alicia Says:

    *blushes at Matt*

    Why…facial cheeks of course..*stammer, mutter…*

  28. Phil Says:

    Richard,

Yes, it’s changed as media firms try to control costs. They won’t accept blatant self promotion, but will accept thought leadership pieces, trend pieces and case studies as long as there isn’t blatant self-promotion.

That’s why many of the pubs I’ve written for in the past can still publish with micro-thin staffs.

  29. Jack B Says:

    @ Jodee:
It would be much appreciated, but don’t overburden yourself (anymore than you already are… damn you, overachievers!).

    @ Alicia:
I dunno - maybe noone visits a day blog after they’ve posted. I know this is the first time I’ve checked back at comments… maybe they don’t see your post!

Get in first and send a big Hi to everyone, and I’m sure at least someone will feel guilty and shout out.

  30. Jodee Says:

    @ Jack B: It’s no trouble. :)
