(please excuse the grammar in my last comment)

I’m not as interested in internships as I am in feature writing or freelance writing conventions, conferences or seminars! Does anyone know of any good ones? Please let me know!
Thanks,

Hi,
What I’m interested in these days is getting information on how to write for magazines that appeal to children, like Highlights, Cricket, etc. Do you have any experts ‘out there’ who could be a guest on your blog, Deb, and give some of us advice on how to break into this particular market? I’ve done the ‘adult’ thing for such a long time, and I’d like to find something different when it comes to writing. I’ve read that writing for the children’s market can pay quite well. Just a thought!

Congrats on the high listing in the Top 100 Blog listings. From what I see here, you certainly deserve it.

Deb,
I believe you about “those mornings.”
I have 3 young kids, and “those mornings” often involve someone screaming, a fever, a small household disaster, an appointment, an unexpected suddenly urgent errand, and an,”Oh, Mommy, I forgot I was supposed to bring XX to school.”
And “those mornings” don’t always have to happen just in the morning!

Hi Deb
Great news about FWJ making it to #2 spot.

Sorry your morning was challenging, but congratulations on your list accomplishment!
The first job in the list has already been filled . . .

I came across one while I was browsing Telecommuting Jobs - I’m not interested, but someone else might be…
Seeking Ad Writer
We are a small, professional, independent publisher of a book on a business model for the escort industry. This is sold through our website and other book purchasing sites.
WHAT WE NEED
Currently we are in need of a motivated text ad writer for occasional work.
WHAT WE REQUIRE
We will only accept e-mails from individuals that possess the following job-related qualifications:
• you MUST have minimum 2 years ad writing experience for internet classified ads including hiring ads for our clients.
• you must have experience writing those small ads for Google AdWords
• you have that skill & knack for getting people to click on your ads.
Additionally, in order for us to consider your bid, you must meet the following requirements:
• The intellect to understand that although we publish a book that serves to educate on how to establish an adult industry related business, it does not diminish our level of professionalism, nor our ability to run an effective, profitable business, and treat contractors, vendors, etc. with respect.
• A minimum of two-years experience that can be verified with you working in that capacity as a virtual independent contractor in your field of expertise.
• Be detail-oriented and confident in making suggestions when you see that something may be improved.
• Have the ability to be organized, set and meet deadlines and work independently in a virtual work environment.
• Possess excellent written and verbal English communication skills to include being able to follow explicit instructions via e-mail, instant messaging and on the phone.
• Demonstrate strong ethics and a solid personal commitment to your responsibilities.
• The desire to work in a friendly, down to earth, virtual workplace that applauds innovation and common sense.
Please include the following in your e-mail to jobs@exoticpublishing.com:
• The keywords I am your new Text Ad Writer at the top of your e-mail.
• Your best “small business” flat rate for ads that are 54-110 words in length, then another flat rate price for Google AdWords ads which are around 2 lines.
• 4 ads you have created yourself to showcase your talent.

@ Deb: Congrats on making #2 on the list!

If anyone is interested, there is a wonderful writing opportunity posted on the London Craigslist, looking for writers to join a six month trek down a river in Siberia and record the trip through regular blog updates.
How tempting it is to apply and enjoy six months of adventure, all expenses paid.
March 13th, 2008 at 2:51 am
Thank you for being such a wonderful source of info & congratulations!

Ann G,
“business model for the escort industry….” maybe Elliot Spitzer should apply

Deb, I can’t imagine a top-blogs list for writers without you on it. Congrats on well-deserved recognition! And thanks for the link.

heads up - the personal injury law firm writing gig only pays $10 per 500-word article…and they want one every day.
March 13th, 2008 at 3:30 am
Congrats, Deb!

Phil:
You beat me to it… nice one!
March 13th, 2008 at 6:12 pm
Congratulations on being second on the list!
March 13th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
I responded to one of the job leads listed, and I heard back this morning (the one looking for blog writers and web content writers).
They want keyword-optimized pieces, which are 500 words in length. The pay rate is $5 for each 500 word post. I don’t know if I’m overreacting, but that just feels like a low pay rate to me. Especially since the first posts they’re willing to offer me are about gambling, and that’s going to require some research on my part. Seems like a lot of work for just $5.
Am I simply overreacting, or is this indeed a low pay rate?
March 13th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
@Lesley - If it seems like too much work for the price, then it’s a low pay rate.
Trust your gut, and never accept a price you’re not comfortable with. (And if it reassures you about your initial reaction, I personally would decline that opportunity because, like you said, it’s a lot of work for not much money.)
March 13th, 2008 at 7:13 pm
@Lesley - P.S. Having a not-so-happy feeling about someone’s rates is not overreacting, btw. Sending a posse of angry writers armed with sharpened paperclips to their office to “educate them” would be overreacting.
March 13th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
@Kristen - Thanks. And that P.S. was LOL.
I wrote back to that individual and said that after reviewing their terms, I have decided to pass on the opportunity.
March 13th, 2008 at 8:40 pm
@Lesley - I started out working for that rate, but it was a topic I knew by heart and didn’t need to research. That tends to be my rule of thumb.
I responded to an ad last Friday and heard back. The guy is starting up a site about antique products and wanted someone to write ad copy, which I have no problem doing. Then he said he was going to pay 25 cents per entry of about 100 words and that he preferred someone who has worked in that field. It was definitely not worth it!

How random that I fit the “nutritional background and mystery interest” post. Am I just a freak of nature or what?
