Writing Gigs

Good morning FWJ Friends! I have some blogging gigs for you this morning, along with jobs for technical writers, content writers, and some internship positions. Mediabistro is looking for instructors, if you live in the New York area and are interested in adding some teaching experience to your resume. I hope you find something that catches your interest in today’s list.

Leads…

Good Luck!

how on earth do you review gay porn? lol.
The PR blog looks great, wonder how many will apply.
This blog is very addictive :)

  2. Fiona Says:

@ Maryam - the same way you review any other movie. :)

  3. Jack B Says:

    Thanks a lot Jodee!
Some good leads for me today (though perhaps I should point out the gay porn job isn’t one of them. Kudos to whoever gets that though)

Some good news, after wrestling with wordpress and hosting and FTP and everything for hours I finally got my travel website up (I’m young, I should know these things already, right?).

Nothing much on there yet apart from a couple of hastily compiled posts, and I still have a lot of work to do on design, but starting June 4th there’ll be daily updates of my adventures.
    http://www.travelsofjack.com
    or http://www.youngrover.com, I couldn’t decide.

I’ll let you know when I get some content going!

    Thanks again Jodee.

  4. Maryam Says:

to jack B : you might want to check the text it seems a little loopy.
I still don’t get how you can ” review” gay porn. It’s not like anyone is grading the acting or the lighting.

  5. Maryam Says:

btw anyone had any succes writing for b5 media? do they pay well? anytime I apply it seems they get steamrolled with applications.

  6. Ann G. Says:

    @Maryam-

It is all reviewed the same way you review a book, movie, television show… For my book reviews, I always base it on “is this worth the money the publisher is charging me?” I count how intriguing the story line is, if the book’s editors missed a lot (and it happens, I found one non-fiction book with the name Abraham Lincoln spelled “Abrham Lincoln” throughout to me an editor should have caught that!), and if the author created a book I’d be willing to purchase.

With porn, the reviewer has to decide if the sound quality if clear, images clear, offer a synopsis of the plot (harder to do with some porn flicks), and decide if the porn is worth the price or lacking something.

  7. Adam Says:

Finally there’s a gig in my town, but, I’m totally unqualified for it! Maybe tomorrow.

  8. Adam Says:

Keep in mind for the movie review, it’ll take you 2 hours just to do your “research” erm, watch it. So that cuts down the value on the $25/review.

  9. Ann G. Says:

@Adam - for some, the free video is worthwhile. It all depends on your budget and spending habits.

My brother is an engineer making $80 an hour, but even he responded a couple weeks ago to the posting for a blu-ray movie reviewer. He offered me the pay to help compose and edit his reviews, but he wanted the free DVDs because they are costing him a fortune.

So for anyone who regularly buys or rents gay porn, the savings alone can make up for the lower payscale.

That’s why I’ve been reviewing books for 8 years without pay. I receive about $500 in advanced copies or first editions every month, some personally autographed. When I was spending $300 to $500 a year on books, the reviewing gig made incredible sense… Even if my house is now wall to wall books in many rooms.

  10. Angelique Says:

    Maryam:

    I write for b5 — http://www.breakingthemirror.com.

The pay is pretty low to start, but if you get involved with the community, you can learn tons about professional blogging.

And just to let you know — I was rejected at least once by b5. :) So just keep trying!

  11. Jodee Says:

@ Jack: You are most welcome! :D

Looking forward to reading about your adventures!

  12. Tai G Says:

Book editor has been flagged. That’s too bad. Why do they do that?

  13. J. Edward Says:

Tai: A lot of people have started flagging job listings in order to reduce competition… they apply, then flag it so that hopefully others won’t see the ad.

In regards to the porn listing (which has been removed by now, anyway), a lot of the review sites like that hook you up with commissions from ads but don’t offer actual payment from the site you’re writing for. They make it sound good a first, then the final agreement is something completely different.

  14. Jack B Says:

@Maryam, Ann G hit the spot, I think. A review should really just focus on whether someone should pay for the product.

The only reason I’m looking at any of this stuff now is because I was lucky enough to land a few jobs reviewing videogames when I was about 13. I’d played them my whole life and it proved to be a good starting point for getting into writing. I didn’t get paid for most of my jobs, but I was getting free games, each worth $100(AUD), sometimes 20+ a month, which was enormous payment for someone my age. Also got invited to a lot of exclusive events for launches and stuff.

For videogames, you tend to break it into basic gameplay, graphics, sound, mention how long it will last you and who it interests. Some people will buy something based on brandname alone (similar to an author’s trusted name, I suppose), or if it’s a kids game based on a movie, they’ll often head towards that.

It’s been great for me, because since I’ve started, it has become a more popular medium and the average age becomes older and generally more spread out, meaning I have to work on my audience, the complexity, etc.

I rambled a bit there. Oh well.

    P.S.
@Tai G, I had written an earlier comment about how you can usually view a flagged craigslist post using google… I could perhaps put it somewhere more permanent so people could use it?

  15. Louise Says:

I placed an ad on CL that was flagged within two hours even though it was a real (and decent) paying job. I was so annoyed that some of the people who had applied to my ad had flagged it to get rid of the competition that I didn’t hire anyone. I refused to work with someone who would do such a thing. Unfortunately, people who didn’t flag the ad were also penalized. I now only post ads at places where people can’t flag and remove an ad.

  16. Jodee Says:

@ Louise: I can understand your frustration. If you are interested in posting an ad here, please contact Deb (deborahng (at) gmail.com) and she will be happy to help you out.

  17. Adam Says:

Wow, it never occurred to me that people were flagging posts on CL to reduce their competition.

    For shame!

  18. Elijah Says:

Has anyone tried to apply to Orange Life Magazine?

This is the second time (at least) their listing appears here. I applied a couple of weeks or so agoand they contacted me a week or so later, demanding three samples to be delivered the next day.

I refused, ’cause it all looked suspicious to me. Maybe I shouldn’t have, I don’t know. They are still asking for free samples…

  19. Scribette Says:

Travelzoo is not paying its bloggers by the way …

  20. Scribette Says:

Orange Life contacted me as well …

They are looking for 3 samples … I wouldnt write 3 samples personally.

  21. Elijah Says:

Thanks, Scribette. I told them to visit my website and that I am prepared to discuss compensation if they are interested in my writing. I doubt they are though :). It’s free writing they’re interested in.

  22. Maryam Says:

blurg about the free blogging from travelzoo i am going to do it just because it is a high profile website, and ups my profile but i wont overextend myself sixty days seems like a long time to get paid though
man i wish the good paying jobs responded as quickly…

  23. BooBoo Says:

    Maryam,

If you’re working for free, how will you get paid in 60 days? Or do you mean you have to do a free sample?

  24. Scribette Says:

Travelzoo does not pay right now. The company said that it ‘may’ start paying 60 days from now.

  25. lo94co Says:

    Hello,
    Regarding Orange Life Magazine:
I’ve worked them more than a year ago, but have never been paid… This is just for your info.. Even if there was a contract…
Maybe you should ask half the payment before to submit anything to them.
Maybe they pay now the actual work - I have no idea. At that time at least, I know that I’m not the only one not having been paid.
    So just be careful..
    Cheers,
    lo94co
